Finding how who supplies your gas and electricity can seem like a daunting task: where to start?! Luckily, this Switch Squid Breakdown guide will answer all your questions and makes things much easier.

Are you uncertain of who your energy provider is? Well, there is no need to worry as there are several ways to find this out. From there you can check your tariff and determine how to get a better deal for your gas and electricity.

How to find your suppliers

It’s a simple procedure to find out which energy supplier serves your home. However, the process differs depending on whether you’re looking for a gas or electricity supplier (or both) and whether you’ve recently moved into the property.

If your home consumes both electricity and gas, you may be eligible for a dual fuel plan, which allows you to use the same supplier for both fuels. However, because the information for the different energy types is kept separately, you’ll have to go through different procedures to find your gas and electricity providers.

Finding your gas supplier

The Find My Supplier service can help you figure out who your gas supplier is.
Alternatively, dial 0870 608 1524 to contact the Meter Number Helpline. (It costs 7p per minute plus your phone service provider’s access charge to call this number.)

To find out who supplies your gas, as well as your MPRN number and gas transporter, click Find My Supplier or contact the Meter Number Helpline. Your MPRN, or “Meter Point Reference Number,” is a technique to identify your property’s specific gas supply.

Finding your electricity supplier

If you want to know your electricity supplier, you can call your regional power distribution telephone number.

Please keep in mind that the cost of dialing a phone number is determined by the first four digits, your phone service provider, and whether you are calling from a landline or a mobile phone. Mobile customers, on the other hand, can now make free calls to 0800 and 0808 numbers.

Using the internet to find your supplier

Your gas and electricity provider can be found on the internet.

To find out who your gas supplier is, check out the Find My Supplier tool. From this site, you can search the National Database for your gas supplier using your address.

For electricity, contact your energy network distributor (whom you may identify using the Energy Network Association search tool). Place an inquiry with them to find your electricity supplier.

Finding your supplier in your new home

It’s usually simple to figure out who your gas or electricity supplier is if you’ve recently moved into a new home. Asking the estate agency, landlord, or former owner of your property who supplies your energy is the easiest way to find out.

At the time of leaving the premises, some tenants contact the gas and electricity supplier to inform them that they are moving. If the former occupant of your home has already done this, the energy provider will most likely send you a letter addressed to ‘The Occupier’ in the near future. This letter should contain all of the information you require regarding your gas and electricity (or dual fuel) provider.

If you have been at your new home for a while and the previous tenant hasn’t informed the gas or electricity supplier that they were moving out, you’ll have to call your local electricity distribution company and the Meter Number Helpline at the numbers listed above to determine your supplier in these cases.

Final bill when moving out

Send a meter reading to your supplier on (or as possibly close to) your moving day and compare it to your final bill when you get it.

Take a picture of the gas and/or electricity meter(s) with a time and date stamp to safeguard yourself. You do not want to be responsible for any charges that aren’t yours past your moving date.

Equally, when moving to a new home, take a meter read and again a time and date stamped picture of the meter(s). Whether or not you switch away from the incumbent supplier(s), it is important that they open your accounts with an open meter read. This read is equal to zero in your account and you will only be responsible for energy consumed from this point.

Finding a good deal once you have moved in

What information do I require in order to make an energy switch?

We’ll need the following information to switch your energy supplier online:

  • Your postcode
  • Existing supplier’s name
  • Your energy consumption

Don’t forget to call the meter number hotline on 0870 608 1524 or use the website to find out who supplies your gas, just in case you have forgotten. In addition, use the table above to identify your electricity provider.

Your energy bill is usually where you may find out how much energy you consume. For the most accurate comparison, provide your usage details in kWh if you have this information.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t have any previous invoices to compare; you may generate an estimate by providing the property’s number of bedrooms. Simply input your supplier and plan name at the start of the process so that we can apply the appropriate tariff rates to your consumption estimate.

Process of switching
