I am Switch. I compare broadband deals for a living, and 500Mbps broadband deals UK September 2026 is not the same search as cheapest broadband or the ~900 Mbps “almost gigabit” aisle.
Cheapest can be a London mid-tier sale, a 5G hub, or a copper last mile. One hundred and fifty megabits covers light homes. Three hundred megabits is the busy household sweet spot. Five hundred megabits is the next shop: several 4K streams, cloud backups, consoles downloading in the background, and a video call that should not stutter when everyone is home. The marketing word is often “ultrafast”. The product on the till is usually a ~500 Mbps average — Virgin M500 at about 516 Mbps down, EE Full Fibre 500, Community Fibre 500, or Hyperoptic 500Mb — with a different upload story depending on the network.
uSwitch’s speed filters still bury 500 Mbps inside “300Mbps+” or provider pages. Our own site already covers 150Mbps September, 300Mbps September, 900Mbps September, 500Mbps August and gigabit August. This is a new September commercial slug — not a reuse of August. I re-fetched retailer own shops today and ranked first-year cash only.
This morning’s cash picture: Hyperoptic’s own homepage still shouts 500Mb from £17 a month (location-variable, April +£4) — Year-1 about £224 on that from-price. Where Community Fibre has built in London, the flash 500 Mbps at £18.90 is Year-1 £241.80 once April 2027 is in the sum. Rural Gigaclear’s nearest card is 600 Mbps at £24 — Year-1 £288. National cable and Openreach stories then run Virgin M500 and EE 500 — in that Year-1 order on the shops I opened.
Compare broadband deals at your postcode. Filter for ~500 Mbps. Ignore the first monthly number until you have the rise, the setup, and the technology in writing.
How I count a year
Assumed start: order or activation around Monday 7 September 2026. First twelve months of cash.
For a deal that discloses a rise on 31 March 2027 (BT Group: EE) or April 2027 (Community Fibre / Hyperoptic’s annual path on the copy I opened):
- seven months at the intro rate (September 2026 through March 2027)
- five months at the risen rate (April through August 2027)
Add setup or activation. Do not subtract a gift card or switching credit unless I could confirm it is still live today and I can put a claim process on it. Virgin’s switching credit up to £300 (ends 20 September 2026 on the copy I opened) is not subtracted from Year-1 — it is a conditional reimbursement, not a gift. EE’s leaving-fee credits are the same story.
Virgin M500 on the broadband-only product I opened holds £27.99 for the promo term in year one for this sum (then a much higher out-of-contract rate later). Gigaclear’s 600 Mbps card is an 18-month promo at a flat monthly — year one is simply twelve times that monthly plus setup.
I rank the cost of staying twelve months. Leaving-fee credits only count after you send the old bill. None of those is a promise it covers your specific exit fee.
I also flag technology. Altnet FTTP (Community Fibre, Hyperoptic, Gigaclear), Virgin cable M500, and Openreach Full Fibre 500 from EE are not the same product. Coverage is address-specific. A London-only sale that wins the cash table is useless in Leeds. A rural Gigaclear 600 is useless on a Virgin street that never saw Gigaclear trenches.
I rank by that first-year cash, not by who pays Switch the most.

Cable vs FTTP vs Openreach
Ofcom’s “full fibre” language means fibre to the premises. Not every 500 Mbps badge is that.
- Virgin Media M500 — cable / DOCSIS hybrid fibre-coax on Virgin’s own network. Average download about 516 Mbps on Virgin’s legal. Uploads are far below symmetrical altnets. Great when Virgin is already in the street and you want a national brand with Netflix on eligible M500 broadband-only deals. Not Openreach FTTP.
- EE Full Fibre 500 / 500Mbps Core — Openreach FTTP where available. About 500 Mbps down, 75 Mbps up, with a 425 Mbps speed guarantee on EE’s Core card. Wi‑Fi 7 hub language on the shop. National Openreach story — postcode still decides.
- Community Fibre 500 — altnet full fibre in London (and limited SE build). Symmetrical uploads where built. Flash pricing can beat national brands on Year-1 cash — if the checker returns a serviceable address.
- Hyperoptic 500Mb — altnet full fibre into buildings (often flats / MDUs). Own site legal cites average peak wired about 527/523 Mbps. Prices vary by location; the homepage “from £17” is a floor, not a promise for every postcode.
- Gigaclear ~600 — rural full fibre. No exact 500 tier on the homepage cards I opened today (300 / 600 / 900). The 600 Mbps at £24 is the nearest neighbour — labelled as such in the ranking.
Buy the technology at your address and the Year-1 cash, not the poster. If uploads matter — cloud backups, creators, two-way video — symmetrical altnet glass usually beats cable and most Openreach 500 tiers. If you only care about download for streaming and gaming downloads, Virgin M500 and EE 500 are the national coverage stories.
500Mbps deals I could verify today
Prices below are Monday 7 September 2026. New customers. Broadband-only. All figures come from the retailer’s own shop. None of them is available at every UK address. I have not invented a BT, Sky or Vodafone 500 monthly I could not isolate on a product card without a postcode today. YouFibre’s September promo does not list a YOU 500 tier. Toob’s live cards are 150 / 900 / 2300 — no ~500. TV bundles (Virgin Sport, Cinema, Entertainment with M500, and similar) are out of this ranking.

- Community Fibre 500 (24-month flash): 7 × £18.90 = £132.30, 5 × £21.90 = £109.50. Total £241.80. £0 setup. Flash ends 16 September 2026.
- Gigaclear 600: 12 × £24.00 = £288.00. £0 activation. Nearest package to ~500 on gigaclear.com today.
- Virgin M500: 12 × £27.99 = £335.88. £0 QuickStart. Switching credit up to £300 (ends 20 Sep 2026) is not netted from this total.
- EE 500Mbps Core: 7 × £29.99 = £209.93, 5 × £33.99 = £169.95, plus £10 activation = £389.88. Month 1 commonly prints as £39.99 including the fee. From 31 Mar 2028 the path goes to £37.99 — that is year two+, not this Year-1 sum.
Lead on Hyperoptic buildings (from-price): about £224.00 year one — only if your address actually gets the from-price. Lead where Community Fibre has built: the flash 500 card at £241.80. Filter ~500 Mbps on the hub
Open the broadband hub. Enter your postcode. Sort by total cost, not by the loudest “ultrafast” badge. Commission does not move a row.
Already sure you want a thinner or fatter pipe? Neighbour guides are 150Mbps September, 300Mbps September, 900Mbps September, 500Mbps August (previous month — do not confuse the URLs) and gigabit August. This URL stays on the ~500 Mbps September aisle.
One honesty note on the hub: if you still see a stale BT YouView-style TV tile in affiliate cards, treat it as rot — this ranking drops TV bundles on purpose. Broadband-only cash first.
Hyperoptic 500Mb (from £17)
On hyperoptic.com today, the hero still reads 500Mb broadband from £17/m, with a disclosed £4 increase every April and a 24-month commitment. Legal copy on the same page cites average peak wired speeds around 527 Mbps download / 523 Mbps upload when one device is wired to the router. Router included at no extra cost on their FAQ language. Up to £200 switch credit on 500Mb packages is conditional — not subtracted here.
Year-1 cash on that from-price path: £224.00. Honest caveat: prices vary by location. The word “from” means some buildings pay more. Reopen Hyperoptic at your postcode before you treat £17 as the till price. Hyperoptic reaches tens of UK towns and cities, but still only where they have built into the building. Flat or MDU coverage is the usual story.
Community Fibre 500 (flash)
On communityfibre.co.uk fibre deals / cheap broadband, the 500 Mbps Full Fibre broadband row I opened for a 24-month term is £18.90 a month (strikethrough £21 — flash 10% off), product code language RES_BB24_STD_500MB_18_90_SU0, £0 setup. After the in-year April step on that row: £21.90 from April 2027, then £3 every April. Flash sale copy still points at 16 September 2026.
First-year cash: £241.80.
Their 12-month 500 flash at £25.20 → £28.20 April is Year-1 about £317.40 — worse than the 24-month flash for anyone who can commit. End-of-term lock language elsewhere on CF (+£4 vs last in-contract month) is after the minimum term, not year-one cash.
Honest caveat: London and limited South East network only. If the checker returns nothing, they have not built your street. Symmetrical glass is the product story — uploads match downloads in a way Virgin cable and most Openreach 500 tiers do not.
500Mbps is a household speed — postcode and technology still decide.
Gigaclear 600 (nearest)
On gigaclear.com, the middle residential card is 600 Mbps average upload/download at £24 a month, £0 activation, 18-month minimum, eero 7 router included. There is no exact 500 Mbps package on the homepage cards I opened — 300 / 600 / 900. I include 600 as the nearest neighbour for rural full-fibre shoppers who searched “500Mbps broadband deals UK” and land on Gigaclear coverage.
Year-1 cash: £288.00. After the term, list price language on the page currently points at a much higher 600 Mbps rate — switch or re-contract before that hits. Rural footprint only. Postcode check is not optional.
Virgin Media M500
On virginmedia.com broadband / M500, M500 Fibre Broadband (broadband-only) is £27.99 a month for a 24-month minimum term product, then currently about £80 thereafter on the legal blurb I opened. Average download 516 Mbps. QuickStart setup £0 (engineer install can cost if you choose it when QuickStart is available). Netflix Standard with Ads language on eligible M500 broadband-only deals — not cash, not subtracted.
Year-1 cash: £335.88. Discounted pricing may vary by location — reopen Virgin at your postcode. Switching credit up to £300 ends 20 September 2026 on the live copy; I do not subtract it from Year-1 because it is conditional on your old exit fee paperwork.
I did not use a lower comparison-site M500 tile. Prefer Virgin’s own shop. August’s older uSwitch-style £21.99 references are stale for this September pack.
Virgin M500 is the national cable story in this aisle. It is not Openreach FTTP. It is not symmetrical. If upload speed is why you want “500 Mbps”, measure that need before you buy the download poster.
EE 500Mbps Core
On ee.co.uk/broadband, 500Mbps Core Broadband (Full Fibre 500) is £29.99 a month, £10 activation (save-on-activation language on the card), rising to £33.99 from 31 March 2027 and £37.99 from 31 Mar 2028. Speed: 500 Mbps down, about 75 Mbps up, 425 Mbps guarantee. Wi‑Fi 7 Smart Hub 7 Plus on the Core card. Contract 24 months.
Year-1 cash: £389.88. Switch credits up to £200 / £300 are conditional — not subtracted. Openreach FTTP availability is address-specific. EE was named Uswitch National Broadband Provider of the Year 2026 on their own shop copy — useful E-E-A-T context, not a reason to ignore Year-1 maths.
What I dropped today
- YouFibre YOU 500 — September offer terms list 200 / 1000 / 2000 / 8000 only. No public YOU 500 card.
- Toob — 150 / 900 / 2300 on toob.co.uk. No ~500.
- BT Full Fibre 500 — postcode SPA; no clean national BB-only £ without address. Not invented from a comparison table.
- Vodafone Full Fibre 500 — hero “from £24” and speeds up to 910; 500 not isolated without a basket.
- TV bundles — Virgin Sport / Cinema / Entertainment with M500 and similar. Ranking is broadband-only cash.
Who 500 Mbps is for
One 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps. Two or three 4K streams, a Teams call, cloud photo backup, and a console patch at once are why people leave 67–150 Mbps lines — and why many stop happily at 300 Mbps. Five hundred megabits is the “busy house that still does not need to pay for 900” tier: gamers plus streamers, hybrid WFH, or a small flatshare with several smart TVs.
If you already know you need multi-gig downloads or symmetrical uploads for work, skip ahead to 900Mbps September or gigabit August. If you only browse and stream one show, you are over-buying — start at 150.
FAQ
Is 500Mbps enough for a family?
Usually yes for a typical UK family streaming 4K, gaming, and working from home at the same time — provided Wi‑Fi in the house is not the bottleneck. Mesh or a better hub placement often matters more than jumping from 500 to 900.
Why is Community Fibre cheaper than Virgin or EE?
Where Community Fibre has built, flash full-fibre pricing can undercut national brands on Year-1 cash. Coverage is London-centric. Virgin and EE win on footprint, not always on first-year pounds.
Should I trust Hyperoptic’s “from £17”?
Trust it as a floor on Hyperoptic’s own site, then verify your building. Prices vary by location. Year-1 on the from-price with April +£4 is about £224 — your till price may be higher.
Does Virgin M500 include Netflix?
Virgin’s own M500 broadband-only legal language includes Netflix Standard with Ads at no extra cost on eligible non-boosted deals. That is not cash and does not change the Year-1 ranking maths.
What about April price rises?
EE discloses March rises on the Core card. Community Fibre and Hyperoptic disclose April steps on the copy I opened. Virgin M500’s broadband-only legal I opened holds the promo monthly through the 24-month product for this Year-1 sum, then jumps hard out of contract — re-contract before that.
Is Gigaclear really a 500Mbps deal?
No exact 500 tier on the homepage today. The 600 Mbps card is the nearest neighbour and is labelled as such. Do not pretend it is 500.

On 7 September 2026, the Year-1 cash order I could verify on retailer own shops is Hyperoptic 500 from £17 (location-variable) → Community Fibre 500 flash → Gigaclear 600 nearest → Virgin M500 own-shop → EE 500Mbps Core. Check your postcode on SwitchSquid broadband, read the contract summary, and buy the technology you can actually get — not the loudest tile.
