Cheapest broadband UK September 2026: ranked by first-year cash

I am Switch. I compare broadband deals for a living, and cheapest broadband UK September 2026 is not a YouView box with a Home Hub 4 in the photo.

I opened our own broadband deals hub this morning. The cards still try to sell BT YouView TV bundles as if they were cheap broadband. That is television. It is not cheapest broadband, and it is not full fibre just because the badge says ultrafast. I will say that once, then I will rank broadband-only cash from retailer shops.

uSwitch’s September hub still mixes comparison exclusives — Virgin M125 / M250 at £18.99, BT Fibre 2 at £24.99 — that are cheaper than virginmedia.com and bt.com this morning. I dropped those. Own shop wins the ranking.

This page ranks cheapest broadband UK September 2026 by what the first year actually costs: monthly price, the March or April rise already written into the contract, setup. Not commission. Not the teaser. Not a Sport pack. Neighbour September speed guides sit next door: 150Mbps, 300Mbps, 500Mbps, 900Mbps.

Compare broadband deals at your postcode. Filter. Ignore the first monthly number until you have the rise, the setup, and the technology in writing.

Filter cheapest on the hub

Open the broadband hub. Sort by first-year cost where the feed allows it. Commission does not move a row. If a YouView Sport pack is still sitting on top, you are looking at a TV bundle — or the live Awin feed is still serving the wrong vertical.

How I count a year

Assumed start: order or activation around Tuesday 8 September 2026. First twelve months of cash (September 2026 through August 2027).

For a deal that discloses a rise on 31 March 2027 (BT Group: BT, EE) or 1 April 2027 (Vodafone, toob):

• seven months at the intro rate (September 2026 through March 2027)

• five months at the risen rate (April through August 2027)

Add setup or activation once. Do not subtract switching credits or gift cards unless I am underwriting them for every buyer. Do not invent April/March pounds when the retailer only says “price may change”.

I rank the cost of staying twelve months. Exit fees on your old contract are yours to add. Leaving-fee credits from Virgin, BT or EE only count after you send the old bill.

I rank by that first-year cash, not by who pays Switch the most.

Deals I could verify today

Prices below are Tuesday 8 September 2026. New customers. Broadband-only. All figures come from the retailer’s own shop (or, for YouFibre, the published Sep 1–30 offer terms). None of them is available at every UK address.

Rank twelve months of cash. The London 35 Mbps Essential card is still £150. The toob 150 Mbps glass row is £226 where they have built. YouFibre YOU 200 locks at £240 for the promotional window. National cable and “from” fibre sit higher once you stop inventing comparison exclusives.

Worked Year-1 maths

So you can see I have not rounded the story.

Community Fibre Essential 35 — communityfibre.co.uk/35-mbps, fetched 8 September 2026: £12.50 × 12 = £150.00. Mid-contract: none on their own FAQ for this 12-month card. Setup £0. After term: currently £16.50 from month 13 if you do not re-contract. London / Community Fibre footprint. Light use. No benefits test — this is open-market Essential, not a social tariff.

toob home150 — toob.co.uk, fetched 8 September 2026: 7 × £18.00 = £126.00, 5 × £20.00 = £100.00, setup £0 (free install on the shop copy). Total £226.00. Then £22 from April 2028 on the same path. toob build areas only.

YouFibre YOU 200 — offer terms at youfibre.com/legal/offer-terms-and-conditions/, promotional period 1 September – 30 September 2026: 24-month package, 200 Mbps at £20.00 a month locked for the initial term. Year-1 cash 12 × £20 = £240.00. Homepage still hides behind a postcode wall; I am ranking the published offer terms, not inventing a basket. Coverage is Netomnia / YouFibre build only. After the 24-month term, the out-of-contract path changes — read the terms before you treat £20 as forever.

NOW Full Fibre 75 — nowtv.com/broadband, fetched 8 September 2026: £23 × 12 = £276.00* if the price holds. £0 activation, £0 delivery, 24-month minimum. Shop copy: “Price may change during 24-month minimum term.” No March/April 2027 pounds on nowtv.com — I will not invent a rise. Asterisk means the freeze figure is optimistic.

Virgin Media M125 — virginmedia.com/broadband, fetched 8 September 2026: £23.99 × 12 = £287.88. Own legal: £23.99 for 24 months, then currently around £62; £0 setup; discounted pricing may apply in selected locations; prices/terms subject to change. No disclosed April 2027 £ on the national own-site card — ranked as flat twelve months. Cable, not Openreach FTTP.

Vodafone Broadband from £24 — vodafone.co.uk/broadband, fetched 8 September 2026: 7 × £24.00 = £168.00, 5 × £27.50 = £137.50. Total £305.50† assuming the £24 floor applies and no mandatory setup on the public homepage. Everyday speed listed at 74 Mbps; plan can be part or full fibre. Dagger means address decides.

BT Fibre Essential — bt.com/broadband/deals, fetched 8 September 2026: 7 × £26.99 = £188.93, 5 × £30.99 = £154.95, plus £10 setup. Total £353.88. Part-fibre ~35–36 Mbps. Wide Openreach reach, not FTTP.

EE 150Mbps Core — ee.co.uk/broadband, fetched 8 September 2026: 7 × £25.99 = £181.93, 5 × £29.99 = £149.95, plus £30 activation. Total £361.88. EE’s shop lead today is Full Fibre 150, not a Fibre 67 card. 125 Mbps speed guarantee on the copy I opened.

BT Fibre 1 / Fibre 2 — same deals page, fetched 8 September 2026: 7 × £27.99 = £195.93, 5 × £31.99 = £159.95, plus £10 setup. Total £365.88 each. Fibre 1 ~50 Mbps; Fibre 2 ~74 Mbps. Same money path. Classic “Superfast” search intent — copper last mile from the cabinet.

What I will not rank

Comparison hubs still try to sell these as national cheapest. Retailer shops do not match.

• Virgin M125 / M250 / Gig1 at £18.99 / £18.99 / £23.99 on uSwitch (hub updated around 3 September 2026) — own shop this morning is M125 £23.99, M250 £25.99, Gig1 £29.99 for 24 months. Comparison exclusives / location discounts, not the national virginmedia.com floor. Dropped.

• BT Fibre 2 at £24.99 on uSwitch — own deals page shows Fibre 2 at £27.99. Dropped.

• Vodafone 5G Broadband 50 at £15 on comparison cards — different product class (wireless hub), not the fixed-broadband homepage lead from £24. Out of this entry fibre/cable table.

• Sky Superfast “£23” — not printed as a public floor on sky.com/shop/broadband-talk without a postcode. Dropped from national Year-1.

• Hyperoptic “500Mb from £17” — location-variable “from”. I will not invent £17 as every-postcode price.

• TV bundles on our own hub — BT YouView + Home Hub 4 rows. First year on the cheapest of those is hundreds more than Essential 35, and you are buying television. Said once. Not laundered into the table.

• Social tariffs (Virgin Essential, BT Home Essentials, Sky Basics, Vodafone Essentials) — benefits-tested product class. Community Fibre Essential stays because it is open to new customers without that check. Social tariffs have their own guide.

If a tile is cheaper than Community Fibre’s shop £150 year and the retailer’s own site does not print that exact broadband-only SKU nationally, the tile is not a national deal. It is a trap for people who do not click through.

Glass, cable and copper are not a rounding error

People google cheapest broadband and get a coaxial socket, a copper pair, or a London altnet, then wonder why the upload is a tenth of the download — or why the postcode checker says no.

Community Fibre, toob, YouFibre, NOW Full Fibre and EE Full Fibre are glass (or EE full/part by address). Virgin M125 is cable. BT Fibre Essential / Fibre 1 / Fibre 2 are part-fibre with a copper last mile. Vodafone “from £24” can be either part or full fibre depending on the street.

35 Mbps Essential is fine for light use: browsing, email, one HD stream. It is not a four-person 4K household. toob home150 and YouFibre YOU 200 are the first rows where multi-device homes stop arguing with the speed test. Virgin’s 132 Mbps average sits in the same “everyday” band as Fibre 2 / Vodafone Everyday 74 — different technology, different upload story.

Cheapest can be 35 Mbps glass or 74 Mbps copper — the badge is not the bill.

£150 only wins if Community Fibre built your street

I am labouring this because “cheapest UK” headlines get shared without the map.

Community Fibre Essential 35 at £12.50 is the Year-1 cash lead I can defend today. It is also London / CF-network only, and it is a light-use 35 Mbps product. If your postcode fails the checker, the national-ish own-shop story moves to toob home150 at £226 where toob has built, then YouFibre YOU 200 at £240 on the September offer where Netomnia has built, then NOW FF75 at £276* or Virgin M125 at £287.88 on wider footprints.

Do not screenshot the £150 row and send it to a relative in Leeds. Send them the postcode checker.

YouFibre’s September lock, with the build caveat

YouFibre’s offer terms for 1–30 September 2026 print YOU 200 at £20 on a 24-month package. That is a proper locked introductory path for Year-1 cash — twelve times twenty is £240 — and it sits between toob and NOW in this morning’s table.

Two caveats, both boring, both load-bearing. First: the homepage still wants a postcode before it shows a personalised basket. I ranked the legal offer page, not a fictional national floor. Second: YouFibre / Netomnia coverage is still a build map, not Openreach ubiquity. If the checker says no, YOU 200 does not exist for you, no matter how tidy the £240 maths looks.

NOW and Virgin: the “may change” asterisk

NOW Full Fibre 75 at £23 looks tidy until you notice the shop will not print a 2027 pounds figure. Year-1 at £276* assumes the price holds. If NOW later applies a rise mid-term, your real year is higher. I will not invent the missing pounds to make the table prettier.

Virgin’s own M125 at £23.99 for 24 months is clearer on the monthly path and quieter on April steps. Legal copy still says prices may change. Out-of-contract currently sits around £62 — which is why walking into month 25 without re-contracting is how cheap cable becomes expensive cable. Location discounts may appear in selected baskets; uSwitch’s £18.99 is not the national own-site card I ranked.

BT and EE: disclosed rises, wider coverage

BT Fibre Essential at £353.88 and Fibre 1 / Fibre 2 at £365.88 are not the cash leads. They are the Openreach rows that actually exist at millions of addresses where altnets have not built. The March 2027 steps are printed. The £10 setup is printed. That honesty is why they sit in the table even when the headline monthly looks soft next to a London altnet sale.

EE 150Mbps Core at £361.88 is a faster product than Fibre Essential, with a £30 activation that hurts Year-1. It is EE’s cheapest Core card on the shop today — there is no Fibre 67 lead card in this morning’s fetch. If you need ~150 Mbps on EE/Openreach, that is the row; if you only need 35–74 Mbps on Openreach, Fibre Essential or Fibre 2 usually wins the cash argument.

August guide stays live

The August cheapest guide remains at cheapest broadband UK August 2026. I am not overwriting it. Prices moved: Community Fibre Essential is back on the regular £12.50 path in this pack (not last month’s flash maths), toob and YouFibre sit in the Year-1 ladder with September offer terms, and the uSwitch exclusives are still dropped against own shops.

If you bookmarked August, keep it as history. If you are choosing a deal in September, use this slug and re-check the retailer before you pay.

How I ranked these (and what I refuse to do)

I open the retailer’s own broadband page. I take the monthly pound, the disclosed rise, and the setup. I add seven intro months and five risen months when the rise date is printed. I sort by that first-year cash. I do not sort by commission. I do not sort by “from” on a comparison exclusive.

I refuse to:

• count a Virgin £18.99 uSwitch tile as the national virginmedia.com price

• invent a Sky or Hyperoptic national floor behind a postcode wall

• subtract a switching credit I cannot underwrite for every buyer

• let a YouView Sport pack win a cheapest-broadband search

Affiliate links, when we use them, do not move a row in this table. If Community Fibre is cheaper on communityfibre.co.uk than a partner deep link, the shop price wins the ranking.

What is the cheapest broadband deal in the UK right now?
On retailer pages and offer terms I opened on 8 September 2026, Community Fibre Essential 35 at £12.50 (£150 over twelve months) is the Year-1 cash lead — London / CF network only, light use. Where CF has not built, toob home150 at £226 or YouFibre YOU 200 at £240 (Sep 1–30 offer) lead among verified altnet glass rows.

Is the August guide still valid?

Why did you drop Virgin at £18.99?
Because virginmedia.com prints M125 at £23.99 for 24 months on the national own-site card I opened. The cheaper comparison tiles are exclusives or location discounts, not the shop floor I will underwrite for every reader.

Does NOW’s £276 include a price rise?
No disclosed 2027 pounds on nowtv.com this morning. £276 assumes the £23 rate holds. The shop says price may change — treat the asterisk seriously.

Is YouFibre really £20?
On the published offer terms for 1–30 September 2026, YOU 200 is £20 on a 24-month package. Coverage is build-dependent. Confirm the basket at your postcode before 30 September.

Should I take BT Fibre Essential or Fibre 2?
Essential is cheaper Year-1 (£353.88) at ~35 Mbps. Fibre 2 is the same money path as Fibre 1 (£365.88) at ~74 Mbps. If two people stream at once, Fibre 2 is usually the saner Openreach buy; if you only browse and watch one show, Essential can be enough.

Do social tariffs beat these?
Often on monthly cash if you pass the benefits check — different product page: broadband social tariff deals. Community Fibre Essential does not require that check, which is why it sits in this open-market table.
