Find Your Business Energy Contract End Date

Your business energy contract end date is the single most important date on your energy agreement. Miss it and your supplier rolls you onto out-of-contract rates, two to three times higher than your fixed deal.
Switch retrieves your contract details automatically using your MPAN or MPRN, including tariff name, unit rate, standing charge, end date, and notice period. Compare better deals immediately alongside your current contract.

How to Find Your Business Energy Contract End Date: 4 Ways

Not sure when your current contract ends? Here are the four fastest ways to track it down.

1

Check Your Energy Bill

For micro-businesses, Ofgem requires suppliers to print the end date and notice period on every bill. Look for 'Contract Information' or 'Tariff Details'.

2

Dig Out Your Original Contract

Your signed contract states the supply start date and duration. Calculate the end date from there. Also specifies your notice period (30–180 days).

3

Contact Your Supplier Directly

Call or email and ask for your end date, notice period, and current rates. Get it in writing. Don't commit to any renewal offer until you have compared the market.

4

Use Switch — We Check It for You

The fastest route. Start a quote and we retrieve your supply details directly from industry databases using your MPAN or MPRN — then immediately compare better deals.

Business Energy Notice Windows: Know When to Act

Unlike domestic energy, business customers do not get the 49-day automatic exit window. Your notice period is set by your contract: it can be up to 180 days. Start reviewing at least 6 months before expiry.

What Happens If You Miss Your Contract End Date?

Missing your notice window has real financial consequences. Here is exactly what happens: and how Switch helps you recover.

1

Out-of-contract rates kick in

Supplier's deemed rates can be 200–300% of your previous fixed rate. A business spending £10,000/year could face £20,000+ in unnecessary costs.

2

Auto-rollover into a new contract

Many suppliers auto-renew without formal signature. The new contract may carry high rates and its own notice period, trapping you for 1–3 more years.

3

Limited switching rights

Once rollover has begun, you cannot switch without early termination fees, typically £500–£5,000 depending on consumption and contract length.

4

Switch can help immediately

Already on out-of-contract rates or a rollover contract? Our experts assess your options, challenge invalid auto-renewals, and secure new fixed-rate quotes within 24 hours.

Business Energy Contract Types and End Dates

Different contract structures have different rules around end dates, notice periods, and switching rights.

1

Fixed-Rate (1–5 years)

Most common. Rate locked for a set period. Your end date is clear from the start. Notice: 30–180 days. Best for price certainty.

2

Variable / Flexible

Rates move with wholesale market. Often open-ended. Usually exit with 30 days notice. Best for maximum switching flexibility.

3

Deemed / Out-of-Contract

Default rate when contract expires or you move premises. Most expensive, switch immediately with no exit fee if you are on deemed rates.

4

Rollover Contracts

What happens when your fix ends with no new deal. Some suppliers treat silence as consent to a new fixed term. May be challengeable.

5

Half-Hourly (HH) Contracts

For businesses above 100 kW maximum demand. Longer notice, up to 6 months. Individually negotiated. End date must be tracked carefully.

6

Green Energy Contracts

100% renewable-matched electricity. End dates and notice periods follow standard fixed contract rules. Verified green tariffs shown on Switch.

Am I a Micro-Business? Extra Protections on Contract End Dates

If you qualify, you benefit from stronger Ofgem contract protections. Micro-business: fewer than 10 employees OR under 100,000 kWh electricity OR under 293,000 kWh gas annually.

1

End date must appear on every bill

Ofgem requires suppliers to print the contract end date and notice period on every fixed-term bill for micro-businesses.

2

End of Fixed Term notification required

Suppliers must send notification at least 42–49 days before your contract ends, giving you time to compare new deals.

3

Notify to switch at any point

Unlike larger contracts, micro-businesses can give notice to switch at any point during the contract without being locked into a notice window.

4

Auto-rollover may be challengeable

Auto-renewal contracts signed without your explicit agreement may be invalid under Ofgem rules for micro-businesses.

5

Energy Ombudsman access

Extended December 2024 to cover businesses with fewer than 50 employees. Can adjudicate contract disputes independently.

Lock in business energy rate before rollover

Lock In a Better Rate Before Rollover Kicks In

Start comparing at least 6 months before your contract ends. Most business energy contracts allow switching 60–120 days before expiry. Missing this window means automatic rollover, often at rates 30–60% above market.
Switch compares every available deal in under 2 minutes. Free, independent, no obligation. We handle the entire switch, supply never interrupted.
