Next update: when EDF reprints SME / I&C commercial product pages or non-domestic switching guidance changes.
By: Switch Editorial Team, Switch Squid Ltd
As of 26 September 2026, EDF remains one of the UK’s best-known energy brands for non-domestic electricity and gas buyers — but commercial purchasing is still quote-led, not an Ofgem household price-cap switch: the £1,723 Oct–Dec 2026 dual-fuel Direct Debit typical bill applies to domestic default tariffs, not most shop, office or warehouse MPANs. Primary CTA is SwitchSquid’s own business energy form only — never MoneySuperMarket residential links on this page.

Who this EDF Business Energy guide is for
Use this page if you are an SME, multi-site retailer, hospitality operator, light industrial site or facilities manager shortlisting large recognised suppliers alongside challengers. Related: business energy. Day13 covered SSE Energy Solutions; British Gas Business, Corona, Pozitive and Yu already sit in the catalogue — this URL opens the EDF commercial lane without mixing residential affiliate journeys.

What “EDF Business” usually means in a tender
EDF’s UK brand is widely recognised from generation through supply. Public commercial messaging historically spans small-business fixed products through larger industrial and commercial structures. Treat every brochure bullet — green claims, online account tools, half-hourly capability, multi-site billing — as orientation until your quote pack restates it in contract language with prices, pass-through treatment and notice periods.
Brand recognition is not a free lunch. Large incumbents can win on meter-type coverage and field networks; challengers can win on sharper flexible desks or dedicated account teams. Your job is to force apples-to-apples quotes.

When EDF belongs on the shortlist
Put EDF on the list when finance prefers a large-group credit story, when you want a widely recognised counterparty for landlord or franchise paperwork, or when your broker’s panel already prices EDF competitively for your load shape. Multi-site portfolios should ask about consolidated billing, hierarchy access for local managers, and how HH / NHH meters are handled in one relationship.
Skip a sole-source award (to EDF or anyone) if procurement policy needs three unrelated quotes, if your load shape needs a fully flexible trading desk you have not scoped, or if you are a micro-business that still qualifies for simpler protections — read the contract classification carefully.
Fixed, flexible and the paperwork that matters
Fixed commercial contracts buy budget certainty for a defined term. Flexible / wholesale-linked structures can win for larger volumes with a risk policy — and punish teams without one. Ask every bidder for: unit and standing components, industry charge treatment, credit requirements, termination and renewal notice, green evidence (REGOs), and outage / metering SLAs.
Letter of Authority (LOA) hygiene still matters. Only grant LOAs to brokers you appointed, with clear scope and expiry. Keep MPAN/MPRN lists, half-hourly data where relevant, and the current contract end dates in one folder before you request quotes.
How SwitchSquid’s business form fits
Our business energy form is the only money CTA on this guide. It starts a commercial comparison journey for UK sites. Further reading about EDF here is educational — the form is where you act. We do not publish invented p/kWh rates for EDF Business; commercial rates go stale in hours.

SME renewal calendar and broker hygiene
Most painful commercial renewals start too late. Diarise the contract end date minus 120 days for larger sites and minus 60–90 days for simpler SME tariffs. Collect half-hourly data where you have HH meters; annual statements alone hide seasonal spikes from hospitality, cold rooms or shift patterns. Bring last year’s invoices, capacity / ASC figures, and any climate-commitment constraints from your board.
Brokers earn differently — fee, commission, or both. Ask how they are paid, whether your quote set includes EDF plus at least two unrelated suppliers, and whether the LOA lets them switch without a final countersign. Keep LOA scope narrow and time-bound.
Multi-site, landlords and franchise quirks
Multi-site portfolios should decide whether they want one national contract or cluster deals by region/load. Franchisees often cannot sign group deals without franchisor energy policy approval — check that before you burn a week on quotes. Landlords with vacant units need deemed / out-of-contract rate awareness so empty shops do not silently rack up expensive defaults while marketing finds a tenant.
If you operate EV chargers, kitchens with heavy three-phase loads, or on-site generation, say so in the first RFP paragraph. Generic “SME electric” packs mis-price those shapes and create change-control fights after signature.
What good looks like in an EDF quote pack
A usable pack states product name, term, pricing components, pass-through treatment, credit conditions, termination, renewal notice, green evidence, and metering responsibilities in plain English. Compare those lines across bidders — not just the “indicative p/kWh” in an email subject. If EDF wins on total cost of ownership and service fit, take it. If a challenger wins on flexible structure with a risk policy you actually understand, take that instead. Brand loyalty is not a risk policy.
How this page differs from SSE / British Gas / Corona / Pozitive / Yu
Those supplier guides already live under /business-energy/guides/. EDF is a separate brand lane for searchers who typed EDF. Same hard CTA rule: own /business-energy/ form only. Same refusal to invent commercial p/kWh.

Deemed, out-of-contract and vacant units
Empty shops and delayed fit-outs quietly rack expensive deemed or out-of-contract rates. Landlords should diary meter reads, keep LOAs ready for incoming tenants, and avoid assuming a vacant unit “isn’t using much”. A small continuous load plus high deemed rates is still real cash. see also our deemed and out-of-contract business guides, then use the form when you are ready to tender properly.
Climate disclosures and green evidence
If your board or franchise agreement requires renewable electricity evidence, ask every bidder — including EDF — how REGOs are matched, whether additionality claims are being made, and what appears on the invoice pack. Marketing green language without contract evidence is a procurement fail waiting to happen.

Half-hourly data and capacity
Sites with half-hourly meters should bring interval data to the tender. Annual kWh hides lunchtime kitchen spikes and overnight cold-room loads. Capacity / ASC figures affect whether a “cheap” unit rate survives once network charges are treated correctly. Tell bidders about EV chargers and three-phase kitchen loads in the first RFP paragraph.
Complaints, account management and change control
Ask who your day-two contacts are for billing disputes, meter faults and change-of-tenancy. Large brands can feel impersonal if the account sits in a generic SME queue; challengers can feel sharp until volume grows. Put service levels in the comparison table next to p/kWh. Change control after signature is where weak packs explode — especially if you under-declared load.
Tender timeline you can actually run
Week 1: gather MPANs/MPRNs, invoices, HH data, end dates.
Week 2: issue RFP to at least three unrelated suppliers (EDF plus two others) via your broker or SwitchSquid’s form journey.
Week 3: compare packs on total cost of ownership, not subject-line rates.
Week 4: credit checks, LOA scope confirmation, signature with diary of renewal-minus-120.
Rushing week 4 into week 1 is how SMEs accept the first email that looks cheap.
FAQ
Is EDF Business Energy covered by the Ofgem £1,723 price cap?
Usually no. Most business sites are non-domestic. Confirm your contract class with your supplier or broker.
Should I fix or go flexible with EDF?
Fix for budget certainty if you lack a trading policy; flexible only with clear risk limits and reporting.
Why can’t I click MoneySuperMarket on this page?
Business energy CTAs on SwitchSquid are the own /business-energy/ form only. Residential comparison stays on /energy/guides/.
What do I need before requesting quotes?
MPANs/MPRNs, usage history, contract end dates, site list, and a decision on fixed vs flexible.
Can micro-businesses use this guide?
Yes as orientation — still use the business form, and read whether your site meets micro-business definitions in the quote pack.
Do you publish EDF p/kWh rates here?
No. Commercial rates are quote-specific and go stale in hours. Use the form.
How does EDF compare to SSE or British Gas Business?
Only via live quote packs on the same usage and term. see also our other supplier guides, then tender properly.
Disclosure: SwitchSquid’s business-energy journey is our commercial comparison path. Brand explainers never replace the form CTA. Residential and business tracks stay fully separate.
