Next update: when Citizens Advice publishes its next supplier scores (due December 2026), when Ecotricity changes its tariffs, or when Ofgem confirms the January 2027 price cap.
By: Switch Editorial Team, Switch Squid Ltd
As of 19 October 2026, Ecotricity is a mid-table supplier on service but one of the strongest on green credentials. Citizens Advice scores it 3.40 out of 5 for April to June 2026 (8th of 16 suppliers), Which? gives it 66% and names it an Eco Provider, and its two-year electricity fix is cheaper per unit than Octopus’s new 18-month fix in the regions we checked. The catch is gas: at Ofgem’s typical usage, Ecotricity’s two-year dual-fuel fix works out at about £1,773.12 a year in the East Midlands, above the £1,723 national average price cap, and it carries exit fees of £95.24 for electricity and £100 for gas. This SwitchSquid review covers the scores, the prices, what customers say. We may earn a commission if you compare or switch through links on this page; it doesn’t change the price you pay.

Is Ecotricity any good?
It depends on what you want most from a supplier. On service, the official figures put Ecotricity in the middle of the pack. Citizens Advice rates every larger home energy supplier each quarter on complaints, contact times, billing and customer commitments. For April to June 2026, Ecotricity scored 3.40 out of 5 and ranked 8th of the 16 suppliers in the table. Outfox Energy was top on 4.03 and Octopus Energy 5th on 3.67.
Its strongest area was getting through: an average call wait of 49 seconds, with 93.6% of emails answered within two days. Its weakest area was billing and metering, where it scored 2.6 out of 5. Citizens Advice found 87.19% of bills for customers with traditional meters were based on a real reading, and 89.88% of its smart meters were working correctly. It received 22.6 complaints per 10,000 customers.
Which? reaches a similar verdict. Its June 2026 review gives Ecotricity a total score of 66%, made up of 67% from a survey of 66 customers and 65% from Which?’s own assessment. It was not named a Which? Recommended Provider, and it scored 1 out of 5 for switching performance. Where it stands out is sustainability: Which? named it one of four Eco Providers for energy in 2026, with a 75% sustainability score.
In the Uswitch Energy Awards 2026, based on a YouGov poll of 15,019 energy customers, Ecotricity won Best Customer Service among small suppliers. So customers who need to talk to someone tend to find it easy, even if the billing numbers lag behind the best.

Is Ecotricity better than Octopus Energy?
On service ratings, Octopus is ahead. It scored 3.67 out of 5 with Citizens Advice for April to June 2026, and Uswitch’s 2026 awards named it the top big supplier for overall satisfaction for the third year running, as well as for customer service and value for money. Ecotricity scored 3.40.
On price, the answer is less obvious, and it changed this week. Octopus repriced its fixed tariffs on 17 October 2026. We compared Octopus’s new 18-month and 12-month fixes with Ecotricity’s October fixes in the East Midlands, using Ofgem’s typical usage of 2,500kWh of electricity and 9,500kWh of gas a year, paying by monthly Direct Debit.
Tariff (East Midlands, Direct Debit) | Electricity unit rate | Gas unit rate (incl. VAT) | Yearly cost at typical use* | Fixed for | Exit fees |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Ecotricity EcoFixed 2 Year | 23.82p | 9.01p | £1,773.12 | 24 months | £95.24 electricity, £100 gas |
Ecotricity EcoFixed 1 Year | 25.35p | 9.87p | £1,888.67 | 12 months | £71.43 electricity, £75 gas |
Octopus 18M Fixed (from 17 Oct) | 27.47p | 9.02p | £1,831.09 | 18 months | £75 per fuel |
Octopus 12M Fixed (from 17 Oct) | 29.33p | 9.11p | £1,886.08 | 12 months | £50 per fuel |
Ofgem price cap, GB average | 26.32p | 7.97p | £1,723 | Changes every 3 months | None |
*Our sums use 2,500kWh of electricity and 9,500kWh of gas a year, the usage behind Ofgem’s £1,723 figure, plus each tariff’s daily standing charges. Electricity carries no VAT from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027; gas includes 5% VAT. Ecotricity publishes its prices before VAT, so we added 5% to its gas rates. Your own region and usage will change the totals.
Two things stand out. Ecotricity’s electricity is the cheaper of the two fixes per unit, by more than 3p a kWh on the two-year deal. Its gas unit rate is close to Octopus’s, but its gas standing charge is higher. Overall, the Ecotricity two-year fix came out about £57.97 a year cheaper than the Octopus 18-month fix at typical use in this region, and it fixes for six months longer.
Neither fix beats the price cap’s average today. The cap can change every three months, though, so a fix is a bet on where prices go next. If you would rather know your rates for two years, Ecotricity’s two-year deal is a reasonable choice. If you want the best-rated service, Octopus has the edge. Our Octopus Energy supplier page covers its tariffs in more detail.
Compare fixed deals with your own usage
Ecotricity’s two-year fix: about £1,773.12 a year at typical use in the East Midlands, against the £1,723 cap average
Octopus’s new 18-month fix: about £1,831.09 a year on the same usage
Main limitation: exit fees apply if you leave a fix early, and prices differ by region

What has happened to Ecotricity?
Ecotricity is still trading and taking new household customers. It published a new tariff booklet for October 2026, with prices effective from 1 and 8 October, and on 7 October it announced a partnership with MakeMyHouseGreen offering £500 off home solar and battery systems.
If you are a customer, your tariff, prices and any credit stay as agreed. If a supplier is ever sold, your contract usually moves across with the business. If any supplier fails, Ofgem appoints a new supplier, your energy keeps flowing and credit balances are protected.
What does Martin Lewis say about Ecotricity?
We could not find a Martin Lewis or MoneySavingExpert editorial review of Ecotricity when we checked on 19 October 2026. What does show up on Google is a MoneySavingExpert forum thread from February 2025, where members discussed the Cheap Energy Club suggesting Ecotricity. Forum posts are members’ views, not MSE advice.
MSE’s general approach to switching is well known: check your own usage, compare fixes against the price cap, and look at exit fees before you commit. That approach works for Ecotricity too.
Which energy company gets the most complaints?
In Citizens Advice’s April to June 2026 table, the lowest scores for complaints (where a low score means more complaints) went to Utilita and TruEnergy, on 0.5 out of 5, followed by ScottishPower and British Gas on 1.0. Ecotricity scored 3.0 for complaints, the same as E.ON Next and 100Green. Good Energy scored best on this measure, with 4.0.
Complaint scores are only part of the picture. A supplier can have few complaints and still be slow to bill correctly, so look at all four Citizens Advice categories before you decide.
What do Ecotricity customers say?
When we checked on 19 October 2026, Ecotricity had a Trustpilot score of 4.1 from 6,705 reviews. Trustpilot notes that Ecotricity has not invited customers to review it recently, so the reviews are mostly unprompted. Recent reviews follow a clear pattern:
Praise: polite, UK-based phone staff, smooth switches from other suppliers and long-standing customers who renew their fixes.
Complaints: slow email replies, smart meter and in-home display problems, and a weak app compared with some rivals.
Business customers: several recent negative reviews come from business accounts unhappy about deemed and renewal rates. Those are separate from household tariffs, but they are a reminder to check your rates in writing.
Which?’s survey found the most common problems were Direct Debits set too high or too low (10% of customers), estimated bills when readings had been sent (9%) and missed engineer appointments (9%). That lines up with the Citizens Advice billing score.
How green is Ecotricity?
Green energy is the main reason people choose Ecotricity. Citizens Advice lists its electricity fuel mix as 100% renewable. Which? says it reinvests profits into new generation and has built 24 wind parks and three solar parks since 1995, matches its customers’ electricity use with renewable power generated in the same half hour 81% of the time, and is one of three firms selling green gas, which matches 1% of its customers’ gas use. Ecotricity describes itself as not-for-dividend, meaning it does not pay out profits to shareholders.
If you want to compare other suppliers on this, our green energy comparison explains what to look for.
Should you switch to Ecotricity?
Good fit: households that want a genuinely green supplier, prefer to phone rather than use an app, and want prices fixed for two years.
Think twice: anyone who wants the cheapest bill at today’s prices, high gas users, and anyone who relies on accurate smart billing.
Everyone: compare the actual price for your postcode, because rates vary by region.
