Cheapest phone deals UK August 2026: A16 from £4.33. The Tab at £1 is not a phone

I am Switch. I compare phone deals for a living, and “cheapest phone deals UK August 2026” is not a Galaxy Tab at From £1.00.

I opened our own phone deals hub this morning, Friday 28 August 2026. Same grid on the mobile homepage. Eighteen phones found, Apple / Samsung / Google / Motorola filters, sort defaulting to Bestselling. The first tiles were iPhone 14 From £24.00, iPhone 17 Pro Max From £105.42, Galaxy A16 From £4.33, then a Galaxy Tab From £1.00. Each of those pounds is printed twice in the HTML. I counted each model once.

The Tab is a tablet. If you came here for a cheap phone, it is not in the race. The A16 from-price is. The Pro Max from-price is a different shop.

uSwitch’s mobile phone deals page, updated 25 August 2026, does the other version of the same trick. Fifty-two phones. Promoted flagships first: Galaxy Z Fold 8 Graphite 256GB unlimited at £57.00 a month until April 2027 then +£2.50 each April, £229 upfront, 24 months. Sponsored Galaxy S26, 200GB, £27.00 a month plus £29 upfront. Sponsored iPhone 17 unlimited at £41.00 plus £25 upfront. Sponsored Pixel 11 Pro unlimited at £29.99 plus £119 upfront. Those are real contracts. They are not cheap phones.

Their iPhone URL still wears an August 2026 title. The byline on that same page is still Updated on 28 May 2026. I used the August deal table for pounds. I am not going to pretend the May body is a live shop.

This page is the gap. I will not freeze a deal list into HTML and call it cheapest. The live handset cards sit below, in hub order, so you see the same row the phone page shows — iPhone 14 / 17 Pro Max / A16, not a cheapest-first tablet. I will tell you what a From price is, which tiles are phones, and when SIM only deals are the cheaper bill because you already have a handset.

Compare phone deals on the hub. Open the card. Read the term, the upfront, the data, the April line. Commission does not move a row here.

What I verified today

SwitchSquid phone hub, fetched Friday 28 August 2026, Europe/London. From-prices on the model grid — monthly, not a total cost:

Twelve unique tiles in the first load. The counter said 18 phones found, with Load More underneath. I have not invented from-prices for models I did not see. Motorola is a brand filter, and the “latest handsets” strip names a Motorola Razr 70 Ultra, but that strip did not print a From pound this morning, so there is no Razr figure on this page.

The hub’s own “cheap mobile phone deals” blurb still talks about contracts under £20. That is generic copy. The tiles that actually print under £20 as a from-price today are the A16, the A17 and the Pixel 10a. iPhone 14 is £24.00. Everything Apple-flagship and Samsung-flagship in that grid is a different number.

uSwitch mobile deals, deals last updated 25 August 2026, fetched this morning. Trade-in strip: up to £690 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max 256GB in Excellent condition, powered by Reboxed, as of 16 February 2026. That is a February valuation, not a Friday cash figure. Their savings footnote still cites £262 a year for leaving an ending 24-month handset contract for SIM only, built from a July 2024 iPhone 15 100GB package versus Talkmobile 100GB at £8.95 as of July 2026. Same methodology their expert copy uses for an £84 a year “new handset” saving. Dated July / methodology, not a live card from this morning. I am not reprinting £262 or £84 as today’s saving.

uSwitch iPhone deals, title “August 2026”, sorted by Uswitch Promoted, fetched this morning. Example cards with a stated total: Affordable Mobiles iPhone, unlimited, £41.00 a month plus £25 upfront, £1,064 total, 24 months, until April 2027 then +£2.50. Fonehouse, unlimited, £30.00 a month, no upfront, £775 total. iD Mobile, unlimited, £35.99 plus £14, £917.36 total, April line +£1.80. Fonehouse, 100GB, £28.00 a month, no upfront, £722.60 total. Affordable Mobiles, 200GB, £25.00 plus £29, £684 total. Body copy on that URL still says updated 28 May 2026. iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are treated as current. Next iPhone 18 expected September 2026, on that same May-stamped body.

I will not invent a 24-month total for any SwitchSquid from-price. The hub tiles I opened did not print term, upfront or a cash total next to From. The live cards below do. Rank those, not this article’s HTML.

From-prices on the hub, 28 August 2026

Four columns. From £/month is the cheapest monthly currently attached to that model tile. It is not the cash you pay for a flagship storage option. It is not a 24-month total. I have not invented one.

From £4 is not the bill.

The cheap phones in that grid, this morning, were the A16, the A17 and the Pixel 10a. Then iPhone 14 if you want Apple without the Pro Max bill. Everything from Galaxy S26 upwards is a flagship-shaped from-price. Ranking those as “cheap” because a Tab sits at £1 would be a lie.

From £X is not the bill

From-price is the cheapest tariff on that model, not the flagship bill.

A From price on our model grid is the cheapest tariff the feed currently hangs on that handset. Often 24 months. Often a low data cap, a high upfront, or both. Often an April mid-contract rise written into the small print. I did not get term, upfront or a cash total from the tile HTML this morning, so I am not going to multiply £4.33 × 24 and publish a fake total. The card knows. The tile does not.

That is why the live row above exists. Default hub order. Limit four, so you get a proper grid like the phone page — not a cheapest-first sort that would lead on a tablet. Click through. If the monthly looks kind and the upfront looks ugly, add them. If the tariff rises every April, the month-one figure is not year two.

uSwitch’s own FAQ on the 25 August deals page still says high-end brands often want at least £50 upfront. That is their generic copy, not a live card. Their live sponsored iPhone 17 card this week was £25 upfront. Their sponsored Pixel 11 Pro was £119. Upfront is a slider, not a moral. Paying more today usually cuts the monthly. It does not always cut the total. I will not invent the total. Their iPhone table sometimes prints one. Ours should too, on the card, not in this article.

uSwitch is shopping flagships. We are naming the cheap phones.

If you actually want an iPhone 17 this week, uSwitch’s August table is the place they printed totals. I am quoting those totals as theirs, 25 August / August 2026, retailer on the card. I am not mixing them into our from-price column.

£684 is the cheapest stated iPhone total I copied off that August table. It is still a two-year phone bill. It is not Galaxy A16 from £4.33. Promoted-first ranking put the £41 Affordable Mobiles card at the top, total £1,064. That is how you sell a flagship. It is not how you rank a cheap phone.

Their generic deals page also led a Galaxy Z Fold 8 at £57.00 plus £229 upfront, unlimited, 24 months, April +£2.50. No cash total on that card, so I have not invented one. Same for the sponsored Galaxy S26 at £27 plus £29, and the sponsored Pixel 11 Pro at £29.99 plus £119. Monthly plus upfront is what they printed. I stopped there.

Our hub from-price on Galaxy S26 this morning was £67.22. uSwitch’s sponsored S26 was £27. Those are not the same deal. One is a cheapest-monthly tile. One is a promoted retailer card with 200GB and an April line. Click the card in front of you, not a number you remember from a comparison-site screenshot.

If you already have a phone, this is the wrong bill

A handset contract is the phone plus the airtime, usually for 24 months, usually with a credit check, usually with an April rise on the big-four-style tariffs. SIM only is the airtime. If the contract just ended and the screen still works, stop shopping phones.

Compare SIM only deals on the hub. Filter the allowance you actually use. If last month was around 100GB, use the 100GB SIM only deals guide (Talkmobile’s 12-month 100GB averaged £8.71 when we dated that page 27 August 2026). If you already blow past that, use cheapest unlimited SIM only UK 2026 (iD’s 12-month unlimited averaged £14 on 28 August 2026; Mozillion at £2 on the hub that morning was 1GB, not unlimited).

uSwitch still tells people that move from an ending 24-month handset contract onto SIM only “could save you £262 per year”. Their small print, 25 August 2026, is a July 2024 iPhone 15 100GB contract versus Talkmobile 100GB at £8.95 as of July 2026. Talkmobile’s own shop has not always matched that rolling pound — we have already dated that fight on the 100GB page. I am not putting £262 in a headline as if it were Friday’s saving on an A16.

Keep the phone. Change the SIM. Come back here when the handset is the thing that is broken, lost, or actually due a generation.

April rises, credit checks, PAC

Almost every uSwitch handset card I opened this morning said the monthly holds until April 2027, then rises every April in contract. The pounds on the rise were £2.50, £2.30 or £1.80 depending on the card. That is not inflation small print you can ignore. Eight months at the intro (if you sign at the end of August) and the rest of a 24-month term at the risen rate. I have not run those totals because uSwitch did not print them on the Fold / S26 / Pixel sponsored cards, and our hub tiles did not print an April pounds figure at all. Read the card. If it names April, budget April.

Credit checks: a pay-monthly phone is a loan plus airtime. uSwitch’s own FAQ, same 25 August page, says most networks run a credit check. SMARTY and VOXI are named there as SIM only / PAYG routes if you cannot pass one — that is SIM only, not a cheap A16 on finance. If the A16 from-price bounces, the answer is not a flagship with a bigger upfront. The answer is SIM only on a phone you already own, or a handset you buy outright.

Text INFO to 85075 if you are not sure you are out of contract. A 24-month A16 is a bad surprise if you still owe eight months on last year’s iPhone. Text PAC to 65075 to keep the number. Free, usual transfer one working day. Do not cancel first or the number dies.

You own the handset at the end of a completed phone contract. That is the point of the expensive version of this shop. If you will sell it or trade it, do not count uSwitch’s “up to £690” from February against a Friday basket. Reboxed will quote the phone in front of you, on the day.

iPhone 17 is current. iPhone 18 is next month’s rumour.

uSwitch’s iPhone deals body — the one still stamped 28 May 2026 under an August 2026 title — treats the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max as the live range, and says the next iPhone 18 is expected in September 2026. Our hub this morning showed two Apple tiles: iPhone 14 from £24.00 and iPhone 17 Pro Max from £105.42. No iPhone 17, no Air, no 17 Pro from-price in that first load. I have not invented them.

If you want Apple and you want cheap, the honest tile today is iPhone 14 from £24.00, then open the card. If you want this year’s Pro Max, you are not in a cheapest-phone article. You are in a flagship article that should show a total, an upfront, and an April line. uSwitch printed some of those totals. Our live cards will print the rest when you click.

Waiting for iPhone 18 is a choice, not a saving I can date. September is their expected window, on a May-stamped page. I will not put a pound on a phone that is not on sale.

What I want you to do

Open compare phone deals. Use the live cards, not this HTML as a price list. If you want a cheap phone, start with Galaxy A16 from £4.33, Galaxy A17 from £5.58, Pixel 10a from £6.25, then iPhone 14 from £24.00 if you need Apple. Ignore Galaxy Tab from £1.00. Ignore iPhone 17 Pro Max from £105.42 unless you mean to buy a flagship.

That is not a 24-month total, and it is not “the cheapest phone in Britain” as a cash figure I can underwrite without the card. Galaxy Tab at From £1.00 is cheaper and is not a phone. uSwitch’s cheapest stated iPhone total I copied from their August table was Affordable Mobiles at £684 over 24 months (£25 a month plus £29 upfront, 200GB). Is the Galaxy Tab from £1 a cheap phone?

No. It is a tablet on a phone-deals grid. The hub counted it inside “18 phones found”. I am not going to. If a comparison site lets a Tab win cheapest-phone, they are ranking a from-price, not a handset.

What does From £X mean on SwitchSquid?

The cheapest monthly tariff currently attached to that model tile. Dated 28 August 2026 on the fetch I made. It is not the flagship storage option, not a promise of no upfront, not a 24-month total, and not a promise the price holds until 2028. Open the live card for term, data, upfront and any April rise. I refused to invent those totals in this article because the tile HTML did not print them.

Should I take uSwitch’s promoted iPhone 17 at £41 instead?

Only if you want that iPhone and you have read the total. Affordable Mobiles on uSwitch’s August iPhone table: £41.00 a month plus £25 upfront, £1,064 total, 24 months, April +£2.50. Fonehouse on the same table had unlimited at £30 a month, £775 total, no upfront. Promoted-first put the £41 card on top. That is their commercial ranking, which they disclose. It is not cheapest. Our hub did not even show an iPhone 17 from-price this morning — only iPhone 14 at £24.00 and 17 Pro Max at £105.42.

Do I need a credit check, and will the price rise in April?

A pay-monthly phone: usually yes to both, on the cards I opened. uSwitch’s 25 August FAQ says most networks credit-check a monthly contract. Their live iPhone and Samsung cards this week named an April 2027 rise of £1.80, £2.30 or £2.50. SIM only on SMARTY or VOXI is the no-check route they name — airtime, not a financed A16. If you need the handset and you cannot pass a check, buy the phone outright and put a SIM in it. Do not keep retrying flagship finance.
