Question 1

Is BT broadband available at my address?

Accepted Answer

BT's part-fibre broadband is available to around 91% of UK homes through the Openreach network. Full Fibre is available to over 20 million premises and expanding. Enter your postcode on Switch to check what BT packages and speeds are available exactly at your address.

Question 2

How much does BT broadband cost per month?

Accepted Answer

BT broadband prices start from around £26.99 per month for new customers on a 24-month contract. Full fibre plans start higher depending on speed. Prices rise by £4/month every 31 March. If you are on Universal Credit or certain benefits, BT Home Essentials starts from around £21/month on a 12-month flexible contract.

Question 3

Does BT broadband include a router?

Accepted Answer

Yes. All BT broadband packages include the BT Smart Hub 2 router at no extra cost. You also get free access to over five million BT Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK. Complete Wi-Fi discs are available as a paid add-on for homes where the Smart Hub 2 does not reach every room.

Question 4

What is the BT Stay Fast Guarantee?

Accepted Answer

The Stay Fast Guarantee is BT's minimum speed promise. If your connection falls below the guaranteed minimum and BT cannot fix it within 60 days, you can leave your contract with no early exit charge. Switch displays the minimum guaranteed speed for each BT package so you can check before signing up.

Question 5

Can I get BT broadband without a phone line?

Accepted Answer

Yes. BT offers broadband-only packages with no landline required. If you want to add a home phone later, you will need to sign a new 24-month contract. Note: if you go broadband-only, you permanently lose your current home phone number.

Question 6

How do I switch to BT broadband?

Accepted Answer

Switching to BT is straightforward. Choose your package on Switch, place your order, and BT handles the rest via One Touch Switching — contacting your current provider and arranging a switch date. You do not need to call your old supplier. Switches from other Openreach providers typically complete within two weeks.

Question 7

What are the best bt broadband deals uk for new customers?

Accepted Answer

The best bt broadband deals uk for new customers typically include a lower introductory monthly price, a BT Reward Card worth up to £150, and no setup fee. These deals change frequently. Switch compares every current BT offer alongside all other providers so you can see which deal saves you the most over the full contract term.

Question 8

Does BT increase prices during the contract?

Accepted Answer

Yes. BT applies a fixed price rise of £4 per month on broadband-only plans on 31 March each year. Broadband and TV bundles rise by £6/month. BT Home Essentials is exempt from annual price rises. This means a 24-month contract will include one price rise during the term.

Question 9

Can I get BT broadband if I am on benefits?

Accepted Answer

Yes. BT Home Essentials is a social tariff for households receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Employment and Support Allowance, or other qualifying benefits. Plans are available on 12-month contracts with no early exit fee. Both new and existing BT customers are eligible.

Question 10

How does BT broadband compare to Sky or Virgin Media?

Accepted Answer

BT offers wider UK coverage than Virgin Media (which has its own cable network covering around 52% of the UK) and a similar range to Sky (both use Openreach). BT is generally not the cheapest option — providers like Plusnet, TalkTalk, and NOW Broadband often undercut BT on price for similar speeds. However, BT's reliability record, UK-based support, and range of extras (Halo backup, TNT Sports) make it a strong all-round choice. Compare all providers on Switch to find the best deal for your needs.
