Question 1

Can I get broadband without a phone line?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can get broadband without a traditional phone line. Full-fibre (FTTP) broadband and cable broadband (like Virgin Media) don't require a standard copper phone line. Some providers also offer mobile broadband using 4G or 5G networks.

Question 2

What is a broadband speed test?

Accepted Answer

A broadband speed test measures your actual internet download and upload speeds, as well as latency. You can run one at any time to see if you're getting the speeds your provider promised in your contract.

Question 3

How long does it take to switch broadband?

Accepted Answer

Switching broadband typically takes 2–4 weeks from signing up to your new deal going live. The One Touch Switching (OTS) process now makes it easier than ever — your new provider handles most of the work.

Question 4

What's the difference between ADSL and fibre?

Accepted Answer

ADSL uses your existing copper telephone line to deliver internet and typically offers speeds of up to 24 Mbps. Fibre broadband uses fibre-optic cables and can reach speeds of 900+ Mbps depending on whether it's FTTC (fibre to the cabinet) or FTTP (fibre to the premises).

Question 5

Do I need to cancel my old provider?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, no. Under the One Touch Switching system, your new provider will notify your old provider and coordinate the switch on your behalf. However, you should always check your current contract for early exit fees.

Question 6

What is a fair usage policy?

Accepted Answer

A fair usage policy (FUP) is a clause in some broadband contracts that limits how much data you can use, or throttles your speed if you use too much. Most modern broadband plans are genuinely unlimited with no FUP.

Question 7

Can I keep my email address if I switch?

Accepted Answer

This depends on your email provider. If your email address ends with your ISP's domain (e.g. @sky.com or @btinternet.com), you may lose access when you switch away. We recommend using a provider-independent email service like Gmail or Outlook.
