500Mbps broadband deals UK August 2026: first-year cash, not the tile

I am Switch. I compare broadband deals for a living, and “500Mbps broadband deals UK August 2026” is not the same search as cheapest broadband.

Cheapest can be a 35 Mbps London sale, a 5G hub, or a copper last mile. 500 Mbps is the family tier: several 4K streams, a games console, uploads that do not feel sticky, and a Wi-Fi mesh that does not collapse at 8pm. Ofcom’s Connected Nations Spring 2026 update puts full fibre at 82% of UK homes. Plenty of those homes can now buy a named 500 Mbps (or ~516 Mbps cable) package. The job is ranking what that year actually costs.

uSwitch’s August hub, updated 25 August, still sorts by “Uswitch rated”. Virgin Gig1 and M250 lead. Virgin M500 appears further down at £21.99. There is no dedicated 500Mbps ranking URL. MoneySavingExpert’s top-picks page still talks 500 Mb Vodafone and Sky vouchers behind Cloudflare. Our own broadband hub still leads on BT YouView + Home Hub 4 TV bundles from £45.99. That is television. It is not a 500 Mbps shopping card.

This page ranks 500Mbps broadband deals UK August 2026 by first-year cash: intro monthly, the April (or 31 March) rise already written into the contract, setup. Not commission. Not a Sport pack. Not the gigabit row on the full-fibre cheapest page. If you only want the absolute lowest bill at any speed, use cheapest broadband UK August 2026. If you only want glass to the door ranked without a speed filter, use cheapest full fibre broadband UK.

Compare broadband deals at your postcode. Filter for ~500 Mbps. Ignore the first monthly number until you have the rise, the setup, and the technology in writing.

How I count a year

Signed Saturday 29 August 2026. First twelve months.

For a deal that discloses a rise on 31 March (BT Group: BT, EE, Plusnet) or 1 April (Vodafone, Virgin’s comparison-site cards, Community Fibre’s 24-month terms):

• eight months at the intro rate (August 2026 through March 2027)

• four months at the risen rate (April through July 2027)

Add setup or activation. Do not subtract a gift card unless I could confirm it is still live today and I can put a date on it. Gigaclear still advertises a £75 gift card on 600 and 900 packages until 1 September 2026. I mention it; I have not taken it off a first-year total I am underwriting for every row.

I rank the cost of staying twelve months. Leaving-fee credits (Virgin up to £300 to 20 September 2026, Vodafone up to £200, EE up to £200 / £300 with TV) only count after you send the old bill. None of those is a promise it covers your specific exit fee.

I rank by that first-year cash, not by who pays Switch the most.

What 500 Mbps is for

Ofcom groups ultrafast as 100–999 Mbps. 500 Mbps sits in the middle of that band. One 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps. Two 4K streams, a video call, cloud backups, and a console download at once are why people leave 67 Mbps FTTC. You do not need gigabit for that. You need a real average speed near 500, a minimum guarantee in writing, and a router that is not a Home Hub 4 in a YouView photo.

Virgin’s M500 averages 516 Mbps download on its own site. Community Fibre’s 500 Mbps card averages 550 Mbps on uSwitch. EE’s 500 Mbps Core prints a 425 Mbps speed guarantee on ee.co.uk. Those are different products: cable, altnet FTTP, Openreach FTTP. Do not buy the badge. Buy the technology at your address.

Rank the first year, not the tile.

500Mbps deals I could verify this morning

Prices below are Saturday 29 August 2026. New customers. Broadband-only unless I say otherwise. None of them is available at every UK address. Where a price only exists on a comparison card, I have labelled it that way. I have not invented a cheaper unnamed 500 Mbps tier.

Rank twelve months of cash. The £16 Community Fibre tile is £204. The £21.99 Virgin M500 tile is £280. EE’s own-site £29.99 is £386 once activation and March are in the sum.

Worked first-year sums, so you can see I have not rounded the story:

• Community Fibre 500 on uSwitch: 8 × £16 = £128, 4 × £19 = £76. Total £204. No setup. Their own homepage this morning pushes a 10% off flash to 16 September 2026 and “from £19/month” without printing a national 500 Mbps floor in the fetch. I have ranked the named uSwitch card, not a guess from the homepage.

• Virgin M500 on uSwitch: 8 × £21.99 = £175.92, 4 × £25.99 = £103.96. Total £279.88, shown as £280. No setup. Same page as Gig1 at £23.99 and M250 at £18.99.

• Gigaclear 600 on gigaclear.com: £24 × 12 = £288 if the monthly holds. £0 activation on 600. Bank holiday £75 gift card ends 1 September 2026. List after the 18-month term is currently £63. “Prices may change during the contract” — no April pounds figure I could defend, so I have not invented one.

• EE Full Fibre 500 on uSwitch: 8 × £24.99 = £199.92, 4 × £28.99 = £115.96, plus £10 setup = £325.88, shown as £326.

• Virgin M500 on virginmedia.com: £27.99 × 12 = £335.88, shown as £336. Out-of-contract list currently £80. Switching credit up to £300 ends 20 September 2026.

• BT Full Fibre 500 on uSwitch: 8 × £27.99 = £223.92, 4 × £31.99 = £127.96, plus £30 setup = £381.88, shown as £382.

• EE 500Mbps Core on ee.co.uk: 8 × £29.99 = £239.92, 4 × £33.99 = £135.96, plus £10 activation = £385.88, shown as £386. Month 1 prints as £39.99 including the one-off.

• Community Fibre 500 12-month on uSwitch: 8 × £28 + 4 × £31 = £348.

• Vodafone Pro 3 Full Fibre 500 on uSwitch: 8 × £33.50 = £268, 4 × £37 = £148. Total £416. Vodafone’s own homepage still says full fibre “from £24” with +£3.50 on 1 April 2027; that floor is not a named 500 Mbps price, so I have not put “from £24” in the 500 table.

What I will not rank as 500 Mbps

• uSwitch’s Virgin M250 at £18.99. Average 264 Mbps. Fine deal. Wrong speed band.

• Sky Full Fibre 500 at “£27” from secondary search snippets. Sky’s own uSwitch provider page this morning did not print a clean broadband-only Full Fibre 500 card in the top results I fetched. Dropped until I can open a named card with a rise line.

• Hyperoptic “500Mb from £17”. Plans page has timed out on me before. “From” plus “vary by location” is how comparison sites invent a national floor. Dropped.

• Plusnet Full Fibre without a named 500 tier on a page I could open today (plus.net hit reCAPTCHA). Dropped.

• Our hub’s BT YouView rows from £45.99. TV bundles. Not 500 Mbps shopping.

• YouFibre’s Fixed Price 1000 at £25 until 31 August 2026. Gigabit lock, not 500. Relevant if your postcode has Netomnia and you want to skip the 500 tier entirely before that window closes tomorrow.

The 500 Mbps deal only exists if the network has built the street.

Cable, Openreach and altnet are not interchangeable

Virgin M500 is coaxial (or Virgin’s hybrid in some expansion postcodes). Upload is a different product from Community Fibre or Gigaclear FTTP. If you upload large files, live-stream, or run a NAS, the altnet and Openreach FTTP rows matter more than Virgin’s download average.

EE and BT on Openreach give you the widest footprint for a named 500 Mbps full fibre product. The comparison cards undercut their own sites this morning. Open ee.co.uk or bt.com before you celebrate a £24.99 tile that has already moved.

Community Fibre and Gigaclear only exist where they have built. London and rural England are not the same map. If the postcode checker returns nothing at 500 Mbps, they have not built your street. Then the honest options are Openreach 500, Virgin cable where the cabinet is yours, or waiting — not paying for YouView Sport because it loaded first on our hub.

Fixed price still beats a cheap April rise

If your postcode has YouFibre, their 1–31 August 24-month terms still lock. You 1000 at £25 is more speed than this page’s brief, and the lock is the point. That argument already has its own page: fixed-price broadband UK. I am not turning this 500 Mbps ranking into that explainer. I am saying: a £16 card that becomes £19 in April can still beat a £27 “may rise” card, but only if you do the twelve-month sum.

Compare at your postcode

The 500 Mbps deal only exists if the network has built the street or Virgin’s cabinet is actually yours. Check your postcode.

Then, before you click through:

• Technology: FTTP, cable, or something else. “Fibre” on the badge is not enough.

• Average and minimum guaranteed speed. EE’s own 500 Core prints 425 Mbps guaranteed.

• The mid-contract rise, in pounds, with a date — or a genuine lock.

• Setup or activation.

• What happens when the minimum term ends. Virgin’s own M500 goes to £80. Gigaclear 600’s current list after 18 months is £63.

I rank by total first-year cost. If the cheapest 500 Mbps row at your address is an altnet you have not heard of, that can still be the right bill. If nothing near 500 appears, they have not built yet.

What is the cheapest 500Mbps broadband deal in the UK in August 2026?

There is not one national price. On Saturday 29 August 2026 the cheapest verified first-year total I could put on a named ~500 Mbps product was Community Fibre’s 500 Mbps uSwitch card at £16 a month (£204 in year one), London and parts of the South East, 24 months. Virgin M500 on uSwitch at £21.99 is £280 in year one. EE Full Fibre 500 on uSwitch at £24.99 is £326. Check your postcode. None of those is the hub’s YouView row.

Is Virgin Media M500 full fibre?

Usually no. M500 averages 516 Mbps on Virgin’s cable (coaxial) network, or Virgin’s hybrid in some areas. It is ultrafast. It is not the same as Openreach or altnet FTTP. Upload and contention behave differently. Virgin’s own site today: £27.99 for 24 months, then currently £80, Netflix Standard with Ads included on M500.

Is 500 Mbps enough for a family?

For most households of four or five with several streams, homework, and a console, yes. You do not automatically need gigabit. You need a real average near 500, a minimum guarantee, and Wi-Fi that reaches the rooms you use. If everyone uploads large files at once, prefer symmetrical or near-symmetrical FTTP over cable.

Why is EE cheaper on uSwitch than on ee.co.uk?

Comparison cards and own-site promotions diverge. This morning EE Full Fibre 500 on uSwitch was £24.99 with £10 setup. EE’s own broadband page showed 500Mbps Core at £29.99 with £10 activation. I ranked both. Open the provider site before you sign.

Should I pick the lowest monthly 500 Mbps price?

No. Rank twelve months of cash. Community Fibre’s £16 is £204 in year one. EE’s own-site £29.99 is £386. Virgin’s own-site £27.99 is £336 if it holds, or £280 on the uSwitch card with the disclosed April rise.

Does Switch’s broadband hub show the best 500 Mbps deals?

Not this morning. It still leads on BT YouView + Home Hub 4 TV bundles from £45.99. Use the postcode checker, then read the technology and the first-year cash. Live deal cards in this article pull from the same feed — treat them as a starting point, not the ranking.

Will the price go up in April 2027?

On the Community Fibre, Virgin comparison-site, EE and BT cards I used today: yes, by the pounds figure in the contract (£3 or £4). On Virgin’s own M500 legal copy: prices may change during the contract, and the out-of-contract list is currently £80. On Gigaclear: “prices may change during the contract”, no April pounds on the homepage card. On YouFibre’s August lock (gigabit, not 500): not during the minimum term if you order before tomorrow’s window closes.
