As of 1 October 2026, Virgin Media’s own-shop broadband-only promos start at M125 for £23.99 a month — £287.88 Year-1 cash (monthly × 12, setup £0 on QuickStart). M250 Fibre broadband is removed from the live solus ladder. M350 is £25.99 (£311.88 Y1), M500 £27.99 (£335.88 Y1) and Gig1 £29.99 (£359.88 Y1) on the 24-month promo framing from virginmedia.com. The up-to-£300 ETF switching credit was removed on 21 September 2026, so it is shown separately and is not counted in Year-1 cash.

This is a Virgin-focused commercial page with Year-1 maths from the retailer’s own legal/promo copy, not a scraped uSwitch August leftover. Confirm availability at your postcode on Virgin Media’s broadband shop.

Year-1 method (no creative accounting)

For every row below:

• Year-1 cash = promo monthly × 12 + setup. QuickStart kit is £0 on the copy I verified; an engineer visit is £30 if you are not using the kit route — I have not added £30 unless you need an engineer.

• I do not subtract the ETF switching credit from Year-1. Credits are conditional (you must have a qualifying early-termination fee, claim process, and timing). Prefer honesty over a fake £0 first year.

• Prices are location-variable. Re-open virginmedia.com with your postcode before you treat any row as a promise.

• Virgin contracts commonly include April price rises (often framed around £4 on live copy in recent months). Budget year two higher than year one even if the headline promo looks flat.

Virgin Media broadband-only ranking (1 Oct 2026)

Volt option: Broadband M250 + O2 SIM is listed around £28.99/month (then £67) with Volt benefits where eligible — separate Virgin Media and O2 contracts. For broadband-only, M350 at £25.99 is the plan to check first with your postcode; Volt bundles need a separate O2 contract.

With M350 at £25.99 from 1 October 2026, it undercuts M500 on promo monthly in this snapshot. Buy the speed you need; do not assume a higher tier number is better value.

What the speeds are actually for

• M125 — one or two people, HD streaming, WFH video. Fine if Wi-Fi is the bottleneck, not the pipe.

• M250 — previously the mid-tier sweet spot; removed from live broadband-only promos from 1 October 2026. Check the shop if any residual listing remains at your postcode.

• M350 / M500 — heavier households, consoles + downloads + cloud backups overlapping.

• Gig1 — when you genuinely saturate lower tiers or want headroom for big uploads on Virgin’s HFC footprint.

Average download figures above are Virgin’s own published averages for those products, not a guarantee at your cabinet. Evening congestion and Wi-Fi layout still matter more than the gigabit badge on the box.

Switching credit — removed 21/09/2026

Virgin Media’s up to £300 contract buyout / ETF switching credit is not listed on current offers as of 21 September 2026. Do not treat retailer footnotes that still mention 20 September 2026 (or a short-lived 4 November claim) as a live offer.

How I treat it on SwitchSquid:

• Do not promote the £300 buyout as live.

• Do not deduct £300 from Year-1 cash in the ranking table.

Virgin versus altnets (honest, not a dunk)

Full-fibre altnets (CityFibre partners, Community Fibre in London, and others) can beat Virgin on price or upload symmetry at some postcodes. Virgin still wins on footprint in many cable streets and on a simple one-brand install. Rules of thumb for September 2026:

• If an altnet shows a lower Year-1 at your door with genuine FTTP and fair exit terms, take it — loyalty to a purple logo is not a bill strategy.

April rises — budget them

Virgin mid-contract price rises (often around £4 in April on recent live customer communications) mean Year-2 is rarely Year-1 × 2. When you compare a 24-month Virgin promo to a 12-month altnet flash deal, model the second year with the rise, not with hope. If the contract copy on your checkout still shows an April mechanism, write it into the spreadsheet before you click.

TV bundles and YouView clutter

Contract length and the real cost of year two

Virgin’s broadband-only promos in this September snapshot sit on a 24-month framing. Year-1 cash is the clean comparison against 12-month altnet flashes. Year-2 is where people get caught: the promo monthly is not a forever price, and April rise mechanisms commonly add around £4 on live Virgin customer communications. If you model 24 months as Year-1 × 2, you are lying to yourself.

A simple spreadsheet for M350 at £25.99 (from 1 Oct 2026):

• Year-1: £25.99 × 12 = £311.88 (QuickStart £0).

• Year-2 sketch: (£25.99 + £4) × 12 = £359.88 if a £4 April rise applies after the first April in contract — confirm the exact rise clause on your order summary because the mechanism and month can vary by tariff vintage.

• ETF credit: removed. Do not reduce Year-1 for the old £300 buyout.

Altnets advertising £20–£25 for full fibre on 12 months can still lose over two years if you re-contract poorly — or win if you hop. Virgin’s advantage is often continuity on a cable street where Openreach FTTP is not live yet. Continuity is not the same as value.

Wi-Fi, pods and the speed you actually feel

Most “my broadband is slow” tickets are Wi-Fi problems. Thick walls, mesh placement, and dual-band sticky clients matter more than whether the shop said M250 or M500. Before you pay for Gig1:

• Run a wired speed test to the router / hub.

• If wired is fine and Wi-Fi is not, fix Wi-Fi (mesh, channel, placement) before buying a bigger pipe.

• If wired is capped near the plan average in the evening, then consider the next Virgin tier or an altnet with better local contention.

Virgin Hub Wi-Fi is fine for many homes. Large brick terraces and multi-floor houses often need extra nodes. Budget that gear separately rather than pretending Gig1 solves a dead zone in the loft office.

Existing customers vs new-provide pricing

This page ranks new-provide style promo prices from virginmedia.com’s broadband journey. Existing customers on out-of-contract or retention tariffs will see different numbers. If you already take Virgin:

2. Ask retention for a like-for-like broadband-only rematch before you cease.

Virgin’s HFC products are download-heavy. Video calls, cloud backups and VPN tunnels care about upload. If your job saturates 20–50 Mbps upstream all afternoon, read the upload figure on the product card, not only “Gig1”. Full-fibre altnets with symmetric or near-symmetric uploads can be the better work tool even when download is lower on paper.

Households that only stream and browse can ignore this paragraph. Households that upload multi-gigabyte project files daily should not.
