Yu Energy business electricity UK: SME quotes, not list prices

Last updated: Wednesday 16 September 2026 (Europe/London).
Next update: when Yu Energy reprints SME product pages, online quote eligibility, or publishes a public p/kWh card (they do not today).

As of 16 September 2026, Yu Energy (yuenergy.co.uk) markets itself as a UK business electricity and gas supplier with fully fixed, part-fixed, multi-fuel, pure green and flex-style SME products — and an online quote path for microbusinesses spending £30,000 a year or less on electricity. I could not verify a public pence-per-kWh price list on Yu’s own pages today: rates are quote-only. Treat any third-party “Yu at Xp” tile without a Yu quote reference as marketing noise.

I am Switch. This guide covers Yu Energy business electricity for UK SMEs: who Yu is pitching, what product families appear on the official site, and how to buy without inventing unit rates. Primary CTA is SwitchSquid’s own business energy form — never MoneySuperMarket for business energy.

Who Yu Energy is pitching

Yu’s official business electricity pages (fetched 16 September 2026) speak to small and larger businesses: online quotes aimed at microbusinesses with annual electricity spend of £30,000 or less (“quote in under 30 seconds” copy), plus pathways for larger sites, multi-site portfolios, and non-half-hourly meter language in the multi-fuel / flex product blurbs. They also publish business gas, smart meter (SMETS2) messaging, sustainability / pure green options, and case-style content (for example Trent Bridge cricket ground “Powered By Yü Energy” storytelling on the site).

That mix matters. A café on a single NHH meter shopping a fixed 12–36 month electricity contract is not the same buyer as a multi-site retailer with half-hourly settlement. Yu’s site claims coverage across those lanes; your quote will still be site-specific.

Why quote-only is normal (and how not to get burned)

Business electricity is not the domestic price cap. Ofgem’s default tariff cap does not set your SME fixed rate. Brokers and suppliers price from wholesale shape, your load profile, meter type (NHH vs HH), credit risk, contract length, and pass-throughs (Climate Change Levy, standing / capacity where relevant). That is why grown-up SME pages rarely print a single “from 22p” number that survives contact with your MPAN.

Buy carefully:

  1. Pull 12 months of half-hourly or monthly kWh if you have them.
  2. Know your contract end date and any notice / rollover (out-of-contract vs deemed are different problems — see our out-of-contract guide).
  3. Ask Yu (or any supplier) for standing charges, unit rates, CCL treatment, payment terms, and exit fees in writing.
  4. Compare at least two other licensed suppliers on the same start date.
  5. Do not sign from a cold call alone — match the paperwork to the verbal pitch.

Faster Switching and microbusiness rights

Yu’s FAQ content references Ofgem’s Faster Switching programme for switches when you are out of contract and not in debt. Microbusinesses still need to watch notice periods and automatic rollovers. If a broker asks for a Letter of Authority, read our LOA guide before you grant wide permissions — LOA is a tool, not a surrender of common sense.

Yu vs “any cheap business tariff” shopping

Supplier brand pages answer “what do they sell?” Comparison and broker processes answer “what do I pay?”. SwitchSquid’s business energy path is built around the own quote form at switchsquid.com/business-energy/ so an SME can start procurement without bouncing into a domestic MSM journey. Domestic MoneySuperMarket links are for home energy guides only — using them for business supply is the wrong product.

If you already have a Yu quote PDF, sanity-check it against a second supplier on the same consumption. Green or multi-fuel add-ons are optional product choices, not proof of lowest cash.

Practical scenarios

Independent café, ~£8k electricity / year: You likely fit Yu’s online microbusiness quote band. Fix length (12 vs 24 vs 36) is the main strategic choice — longer fixes can look cheaper per kWh but hurt if you close a site early.

Workshop with growing EV chargers: Load shape is changing. A rigid fully-fixed quote on last year’s kWh can miss night charging. Ask whether flex / capacity components fit, and whether your meter needs upgrading.

Multi-site retailer: Multi-fuel / multi-site copy on Yu’s site is a starting conversation, not a price. Expect account-managed quotes and staggered end dates across sites.

Half-hourly meters, CCL and pass-throughs

If your site is half-hourly settled, your quote shape will not look like a microbusiness fixed card. Capacity charges, reactive power, and time-of-use wholesale exposure can dwarf the “unit rate” line someone reads out on a phone call. Ask Yu (or any supplier) to itemise pass-throughs. Climate Change Levy treatment should be explicit for electricity and gas where relevant — CCL is not optional trivia for workshops and factories.

Smart meter rollouts (SMETS2 language appears on Yu’s marketing) can improve data quality for quotes, but a smart meter alone does not cut your rate. The contract does.

Out-of-contract risk while you “wait for Yu”

Many SMEs bleed cash on out-of-contract or evergreen rates while a broker “shops the market”. If your fixed ends in four weeks, start procurement now. Yu’s Faster Switching references help when you are eligible to leave; they do not freeze a punitive OoC rate while email chains drag. Pair this page with SwitchSquid’s out-of-contract business energy guide and deemed-rates guide so you know which legal bucket you are in.

Keep a calendar reminder 120 and 60 days before end date. That single habit beats any blog tip about chasing a mythical published Yu p/kWh.

Green claims and due diligence

Yu’s pure green positioning is a product choice. For SME buyers, ask what “green” means in the contract pack: REGOs, specific generation, or a tariff label. Green does not automatically mean cheapest, and cheapest does not automatically mean fair pass-throughs. Put sustainability goals in the RFP as scored criteria beside cash — then pick deliberately.

Companies House / credit checks cut both ways: suppliers assess you, and you should confirm you are contracting with the licensed entity named on the quote. Keep MPAN/MPRN details accurate; wrong meter IDs are how switches bounce.

What “competitive prices in seconds” does and does not mean

Yu’s marketing promises speed for eligible microbusiness online quotes. Speed is useful; it is not the same as a binding rate without credit checks, meter validation and contract acceptance. Until you have a signed schedule with start date, unit rates, standing charges and CCL lines, you do not have a price — you have a lead. Keep that distinction when a salesperson quotes a single number on a call.

FAQ

What is Yu Energy’s business electricity rate per kWh?
Yu does not publish a single public p/kWh on the pages fetched on 16 September 2026. Rates are produced through their quote journey (including an online path for microbusinesses ≤ £30,000 electricity spend).

Can small businesses get a Yu Energy quote online?
Yu’s site advertises online quotes for microbusinesses spending £30,000 or less per year on electricity, with “under 30 seconds” messaging. Larger spends typically need a fuller sales path.

Does Yu Energy supply business gas as well?
Yes — the official site markets business gas alongside business electricity, plus multi-fuel options.

Is Yu Energy covered by the Ofgem domestic price cap?
No. The domestic default tariff cap is not your SME fixed rate. Business contracts are separately negotiated.

How long does a business electricity switch take?
Yu references Ofgem Faster Switching when you are eligible (for example out of contract and not in debt). Exact timelines depend on your meter, objections, and contract terms — get the switch date in writing.

Should I use a Letter of Authority with Yu or a broker?
Only with a narrow, dated LOA you understand. See SwitchSquid’s letter of authority guide before granting wide broker powers.

Where do I start if I want quotes beyond Yu?
Use switchsquid.com/business-energy/ for SwitchSquid’s own business quote form, and keep supplier paperwork side by side.

Do you publish Yu unit rates on this page?
No — inventing p/kWh would be misleading. When Yu or a signed quote pack gives you numbers, those documents are the source of truth.
