I am Switch. I compare phone deals for a living, and cheapest phone deals UK September 2026 is not an iPhone 17 Pro Max from-price, and it is not a Galaxy Tab at From £1.00.
Last month I published cheapest phone deals UK August 2026 around hub from-prices. This is a new September URL — same shopping intent, fresh retailer cash. I re-opened network and retailer shops this morning, Saturday 5 September 2026, and ranked what you actually pay over 24 months: upfront plus the monthly schedule, including printed April rises where the shop shows them.
The cash lead is not a locked contract. It is Currys SIM-free Galaxy A16 at £139 plus a verified cheap SIM — Talkmobile Flex 30GB at £6.95 a month — £305.80 over 24 months. The cheapest locked handset contract I can stand behind on a retailer shop today is iD Mobile Galaxy A16 4G, 10GB, £15.99 a month, £0 upfront, £423.36 once you count iD’s published April rises on a September start. Third is iD’s Galaxy A17 4G 10GB at £16.99 — £447.36 with the same rise maths.

What I verified today
Retailer shops, Saturday 5 September 2026, Europe/London. I will not invent a pound that only exists on a comparison tile.
Currys — Samsung Galaxy A16 128GB Black SIM-free, currys.co.uk product 10272681: cash price £139.00 in schema / page price. Optional Currys finance at £5.63 a month over 36 months at 29.9% APR is store credit, not a network contract — I am ranking the £139 cash buy.
Talkmobile Flex 30GB, talkmobile.co.uk/sim-only-deals: £6.95 a month, 30-day rolling, unlimited UK minutes and texts. Twenty-four months at that rate is £166.80. Pair with the Currys handset and the path totals £305.80.
iD Mobile — Galaxy A16 4G 128GB, idmobile.co.uk/shop/pay-monthly/samsung-a16-4g plan matrix: £15.99 a month + £0 upfront, 10GB, 24 months, unlimited minutes and texts. Monthly rises to £17.79 from the April 2027 bill and £19.59 from the April 2028 bill (£1.80 each April on iD phone plans). On a September 2026 start that is 7 × £15.99 + 12 × £17.79 + 5 × £19.59 = £423.36. Headline without rises: £15.99 × 24 = £383.76. Same page also sells 50GB at £16.99, 500GB at £17.99 + £19 upfront, and unlimited at £18.99.
iD Mobile — Galaxy A17 4G 128GB, product page: £16.99 + £0, 10GB, rises £18.79 / £20.59 → £447.36 with rises (headline £407.76).
iD Mobile — Galaxy A17 5G, product page: £17.99 + £0, 10GB → £471.36 with rises.
iD Mobile — Pixel 10a product page: cheapest matrix row £25.99 + £9, 10GB → rises £27.79 / £29.59 → £672.36. The Google listing tile still advertised From £22.99 + £9; the product page has no £22.99 row this morning, so the product page wins.
Vodafone — Galaxy A16, Red 30GB, vodafone.co.uk pay-monthly grid: £30 a month + £20 upfront, 24-month airtime / 36-month device (£4 of a £164 handset). Printed rises to £32.50 on 1 April 2027 and £35 on 1 April 2028. First 24 bill months with rises: £795. You can still owe device months after airtime ends — that is why Vodafone is in the “not cheap” column, not the top three.

Tesco Mobile’s A17 5G shop shows Clubcard SIM-free promotional copy at £159 (was £189) with a £10 top-up, window text through 6 September 2026. That path plus Talkmobile 30GB would land around £325.80 — still under every locked iD row above — but the Clubcard window ends tomorrow, and I could not extract a clean 24-month contract matrix from the static HTML, so Tesco contracts stay out of the ranked table.
SIM-free often beats the locked phone
A handset contract is a loan plus airtime. Buy the phone with cash at Currys for £139, drop in Talkmobile at £6.95, and you are about £117 ahead of iD’s cheapest A16 contract after two years — and you are carrying 30GB instead of 10GB.
That gap is the whole point of this September refresh. Comparison sites still lead with promoted flagships. Mid-range A-series cash is where “cheapest phone deals UK” actually lives.
If the screen you already own still works, do not buy either path. Use SIM only. Talkmobile 30GB at £6.95 and iD’s rolling 30GB at £7.00 on idmobile.co.uk/sim-only-deals were both on the shops this morning.

- iD Pixel 10a listing From £22.99 — not on the product-page plan matrix; ranked £25.99 + £9 instead.
Hub from-prices are not totals
Our grid this morning still prints cheap from-prices that look nothing like the retailer cash above. That is normal: a From price is the cheapest monthly the feed can hang on that model tile. It may hide a high upfront, a thin data cap, or a different retailer card entirely.

April rises, credit checks, PAC
iD phone plans: +£1.80 each April on the bill date — printed next to the A16/A17 matrix. Vodafone printed explicit April 2027 / 2028 pounds on the A16 Red 30GB card. Talkmobile Flex rolling SIMs do not use that handset April schedule. Currys cash SIM-free has no network April line because there is no network contract on the handset.
Pay-monthly phones usually mean a credit check. If the A16 contract bounces, buy the Currys handset with cash and take Talkmobile or iD SIM only. Do not keep retrying flagship finance.

What I want you to do
If you need a cheap new phone this week: start with the £305.80 Currys + Talkmobile path, then the £423.36 iD A16 contract if you want one bill and will live on 10GB (or pay £16.99 for iD’s 50GB A16 row at the same cash band as the A17 4G). Use the live phone deals cards to confirm the feed still matches before you apply.
If you want Apple on a budget, the hub’s honest from-price tile is still iPhone 14 from £24.00 — open the card for the total. iPhone 17 Pro Max from £105.42 is a different shop.

Is SIM-free really cheaper than a contract?
Today, yes on this A16 path — about £117 cheaper than iD’s best locked A16 row over 24 months, with triple the data versus that 10GB tariff. You need the upfront cash (or you pay Currys finance APR). Contracts win on spreading the handset if you cannot pay £139 today and you accept less data.
Why not the Galaxy Tab from £1?
It is a tablet on a phone grid. Same trap as August. It does not win a cheapest-phone search on this site.
Should I wait for iPhone 18?
September rumour season is not a dated saving. If you need a phone this week, buy a verified mid-ranger. If you need Apple cheap, open the iPhone 14 card on the hub — not Pro Max theatre.
Do prices rise in April?
On iD handset plans: yes, £1.80 each April on the bill date, printed on the A16/A17 pages. Vodafone printed larger steps on the A16 Red 30GB card. Talkmobile Flex rolling and Currys cash handsets are different products. Always read the card you are about to sign.
