Ofcom rules require new contracts to state any annual increase in pounds and pence. Find the figure and add it to your total before you compare.
The contract length
24 months is standard; 36-month terms lower the monthly payment and raise the commitment. On a handset you may want to replace in two years, the longer term can cost more than it saves.
Whether the bill drops once the handset is paid off
On a split device-plan contract it normally does. On a bundled contract it often does not. Ask, and get the answer in writing.
The data allowance against what you actually use
Your current network can tell you your real monthly usage. Buying unlimited data because a new phone feels like it deserves it is an easy way to overpay.
Early exit and upgrade terms
Check what leaving early costs and whether the deal carries an early-upgrade right. If you upgrade every year, a contract built for two years is the wrong shape.
Insurance, excess and what is already covered
Network insurance is sold hard at the point of order. Check the excess, and check whether your home insurance or bank account already covers the handset.
