Every broadband speed test measures three core things: how fast you can download data, how fast you can upload it, and how responsive your connection is.

Download Speed

How fast data travels from the internet to your device. Affects streaming, browsing, and file downloads. Measured in Mbps. The most important metric for everyday use.

Upload Speed

How fast your device sends data to the internet. Critical for video calls, cloud backups, and sharing files. Usually lower than download on standard broadband. Important for working from home.

Ping / Latency

The round-trip time for a request to reach a server and return. Measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower is always better, especially critical for gaming and video calls. Under 50ms is good for most uses.

Finally, the test estimates your connection type from your latency and jitter patterns: full fibre (FTTP) connections typically show lower, more consistent latency than copper-based broadband, which can help confirm what technology your line is using.

The way you run a speed test can significantly affect your results. Follow these steps to get the most accurate measurement of your broadband performance.

Plug directly into your router with an ethernet cable. Wi-Fi speeds can be 30–50% lower than your actual broadband speed due to signal loss and interference.

Broadband speeds can vary by time of day. Test in the morning, evening, and at peak time (8–10pm) to see if network congestion is affecting your connection.

Run the test at least 3–4 times and compare results. A single test can give an outlier reading. Consistent results across multiple runs are more meaningful.

Any downloads, streaming, or active browser tabs consume bandwidth during the test. For an accurate result, close everything and pause background updates before starting.

Distance from your router and physical obstacles (walls, furniture) reduce Wi-Fi signal. For the most accurate broadband speed, test as close to the router as possible.

Under Ofcom's Voluntary Code of Practice, broadband providers in the UK must guarantee a minimum speed when you sign up. If your connection consistently falls below that guaranteed level, you have clear consumer rights. First, contact your provider and report the slow speed, they have 30 days to resolve the issue. If the problem is unresolved after 30 days, you are entitled to exit your contract without paying any penalty or early exit fee.
Providers must give you a guaranteed minimum speed at the point of sale, and this figure is the benchmark for any complaint. You can also escalate your complaint to Ofcom or your provider's ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) scheme if the issue is not resolved satisfactorily.
