What “1GB full fibre” actually means
Retailers sell “900Mbps”, “1Gb”, and “1.6Gb” cards that all sit in the same shopper headspace: Openreach FTTP (or alt-net FTTP) with a gigabit-class download. Upload, contention, Wi-Fi 6 vs 7 mesh, and the March mid-contract rise matter more than the marketing number on the tile.
If your postcode is still on FTTC (fibre to the cabinet), you cannot buy a true 1GB full-fibre service from an Openreach ISP until the premises are enabled. Always run the retailer’s checker before you treat a national card as yours.

Who actually needs ~1GB
4K streams on three TVs, cloud backups, a games console downloading overnight, and two video calls at once will usually be fine on 500Mbps if Wi-Fi is healthy. 900Mbps–1.6Gb helps when several people upload large files, run NAS sync, or the household insists on wired 2.5Gb NICs. Mesh quality and the Openreach ONT placement decide more than the ISP logo.
Single-person flats rarely need 1GB. Paying for vanity speed while the router sits behind a fridge is a classic waste.
March rises, contracts and exit fees
BT Group brands (BT, EE, Plusnet) commonly use fixed pounds-and-pence March rises on newer contracts rather than CPI/RPI. Read the order summary for the exact £ rise each 31 March. A cheap month-1 tile that jumps £4 every March for two years changes Year-2 and Year-3 cash — run the blended arithmetic before you celebrate.
Average contract length is still 24 months on many full-fibre cards. Early termination charges usually taper. If you may move house within 12 months, ask about home-move policies before you lock in.

Installation, Wi-Fi and mesh reality
FTTP installs need an engineer visit if the ONT is not already live. Same-day or next-day activation is marketing language for premises that already have an active full-fibre service. Budget a morning off work for a first-time install.
Wi-Fi 6/7 hubs help; thick Victorian walls still win. Budget a mesh node for the loft office before you blame the ISP for a 200Mbps wireless speed test on 900Mbps fibre.

When 500Mbps is the smarter buy
If your speed tests on Wi-Fi never crest 400Mbps on your current 500Mbps plan, jumping to 900Mbps will not feel magical. Fix mesh, channel congestion, and Ethernet first. Buy 1GB when a wired laptop already saturates the old plan or when multiple concurrent 4K encodes fight for upload.
Openreach vs alt-net at gigabit
Openreach FTTP underpins BT, EE, Plusnet, and many white-label ISPs. Alt-nets (CityFibre partners, Community Fibre, Hyperoptic, and others) build their own fibres to the premises. Speeds can look similar on a marketing tile while upload, contention, and install SLAs differ. If both Openreach and an alt-net light your street, get two quotes — and compare the full contract terms from each before you order.
Landlord permission still blocks some FTTP installs in flats. Check the building’s wayleave status before you book annual leave for an engineer who cannot enter the riser.
Reading BT’s offer page
BT’s offer page can show a different plan or price from an older article or comparison table. When we checked on 24 October 2026, our link opened BT’s Full Fibre 150 offer at £23.99 a month. Always go by the price in your BT basket on the day you order.
BT bundles with TV and Sport cost much more each month. Our buttons open a broadband-only offer, so you don’t pay for TV you won’t watch. Add TV only if you will actually watch it.
Upload, gaming and mesh
Gigabit download with a weak upload still hurts cloud backups and two-way video. Read the package’s upload guarantee, not just the download headline. Competitive gamers should prefer wired Ethernet to the console; Wi-Fi 6E helps but does not beat a cable. Parents on conference calls need a mesh node near the loft office more than they need 1.6Gb vanity.
Speed tests should be repeated at peak evening hours. A quiet Sunday morning 900Mbps result means little if 8pm congestion halves throughput. Keep screenshots for any speed guarantee claims.
Switching broadband without losing voice
If you still need a landline for a monitored alarm or telecare, say so before you order a digital voice product. Many full-fibre “broadband-only” paths replace the analogue line. Alarms and lift lines can fail on a naive switch. Ask the gaining provider for a compatibility check in writing.
Number ports for digital voice follow different timelines than mobile PACs. Do not cancel the losing provider until the gaining provider confirms the voice path.
Year-1 cost: BT versus EE
Take the monthly price in your BT basket on the day you buy (Full Fibre 150 was £23.99 a month through our link on 24 October 2026), multiply by 12 and add any activation fee.
