Next update: when SMARTY changes its plans or offers.
By: Switch Editorial Team, Switch Squid Ltd
As of 24 October 2026, SMARTY’s plan page through our link offers 40GB of 5G data with unlimited UK calls and texts for £7 a month on a one-month plan, against 32GB for £8, or 40GB for £10, on SMARTY’s public plan list. SMARTY is a good, no-frills SIM for most people: it runs on Three’s network, has no annual price rises, no credit check and no contract, and includes up to 12GB of EU roaming. The catch is that support is online only, with no phone line or shops, and Three’s coverage is worth checking at your postcode first. This SwitchSquid review covers the network, prices, roaming and how SMARTY compares with giffgaff, iD Mobile and Lebara. We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page; it doesn’t change the price you pay.

- 40GB of 5G and 4G data with unlimited UK calls and texts for £7 a month, when we checked on 24 October 2026 (SMARTY’s public price list: 32GB for £8, or 40GB for £10)

Is SMARTY any good?
For most people who want a cheap, flexible SIM, yes. SMARTY keeps things simple: every plan is a one-month plan you can change or cancel, you pay upfront so there is no credit check, and it promises no annual price rises. Plans include 5G at no extra cost, WiFi calling, unlimited UK hotspotting and EU roaming. Its Unlimited plan has no fair usage limit in the UK.
SMARTY isn’t for everyone, though. It is 100% online: there are no shops, and help comes through its website, app and community rather than a phone line. It runs on Three’s network, so if Three is weak where you live or work, SMARTY will be too.

What network does SMARTY use?
SMARTY runs on Three’s network. Its site says it is “powered by our friends at Three” and that its 4G network covers 99% of the UK outdoor population, while the plan page our link opens quotes 99.5% outdoor coverage. SMARTY is a trading name of Hutchison 3G UK Limited, and its site lists it alongside Vodafone UK, Three UK, VOXI and Talkmobile as part of VodafoneThree.
Population coverage figures are about outdoor signal across the country, so they don’t tell you how good the signal is inside your home. Use SMARTY’s coverage checker with your home and work postcodes before you order, and remember you can leave at the end of any month if it doesn’t work out.

SMARTY vs giffgaff, iD Mobile and Lebara
How SMARTY’s £7 plan compares with similar cheap SIMs on 24 October 2026:
SIM | Price a month | Data | Contract | Upfront | Code | 12-month cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
SMARTY 40GB (our link) | £7 | 40GB | 1 month | £7 | No code needed | £84 | Flexibility with no price rises |
iD Mobile 50GB | £8 | 50GB | 12 or 24 months | £0 | None | £96 | More data if you are happy with a contract |
giffgaff 40GB | £8 | 40GB (6GB plus 34GB extra free) | 18 months | £0 | None | £96 | Fans of giffgaff happy to commit |
Lebara 30GB | £10 | 30GB | 30 days | £10 | None | £120 | Vodafone network coverage |
The 12-month costs assume the monthly price stays the same, which SMARTY promises for its rolling plans. What the numbers say: SMARTY’s £7 for 40GB is the cheapest of the four: £12 a year less than giffgaff’s 40GB at £8, without tying you in for 18 months, and £36 a year less than Lebara’s 30GB at £10. iD Mobile’s 50GB at £8 gives 10GB more for £1 a month extra, but on a 12- or 24-month contract.
Choose giffgaff 40GB for £8 a month if you are happy to commit for 18 months
- 40GB (6GB plus 34GB extra free) with unlimited UK calls and texts for £8 a month on an 18-month plan, when we checked on 24 October 2026
- No code needed; runs on O2’s network, a good option if Three is weak where you live
- Main limitation: an 18-month commitment, and £1 a month more than SMARTY’s £7 offer
Is SMARTY better than EE?
They are built for different people. EE is a full network with its own masts, shops, phone support and plans with handsets. SMARTY is a low-cost, online-only brand on Three’s network. If EE is the only network with a strong signal where you live, the extra cost may be worth it. If Three’s coverage is good for you, SMARTY costs far less for a similar amount of data and doesn’t raise its price each year. Our EE network SIM deals page shows current EE-network options.
Why is SMARTY so cheap?
Mostly because it runs lean. SMARTY has no high street shops, support is online, and you pay for each month upfront, which removes credit checks and bad-debt costs. It also uses Three’s existing network rather than building its own. You get the same network as Three customers, but without the extras that come with a big-network contract.
SMARTY roaming, eSIM and switching
EU roaming: your usual minutes and texts at no extra cost in EU countries, with up to 12GB of data.
eSIM: available on all plans, as well as SIM, micro-SIM and nano-SIM.
Keep your number: text PAC to 65075 on your current network to get a code valid for a month, then enter it when you join SMARTY.
Referrals: SMARTY says you and a friend can each get up to a £20 gift card when they join through your referral.
Our guide to getting a PAC code explains the switching steps, and if you are torn between two favourites, read our giffgaff vs SMARTY unlimited comparison.
