Is E.ON Next Pledge worth it? As of 26 October 2026, Next Pledge is a 12-month tracker that E.ON Next guarantees will always be priced below Ofgem’s price cap, saving about £50 a year at average use (£25 per fuel), so a typical home pays roughly £1,673 a year against today’s £1,723 cap. The catch is that the rates still move with the cap every quarter, and January 2027 forecasts point up: Cornwall Insight expects £1,999 and E.ON Next’s own forecast is £2,166, which would put Pledge between about £1,949 and £2,116 at typical use. Pledge suits you if you want a guaranteed discount and flexibility, because you can move to an E.ON Next fix with no internal exit fee; it does not suit you if you need a fixed bill through winter. Leaving for another supplier costs £25 per fuel. This SwitchSquid guide explains how Next Pledge works, what it costs now and in January, and how it compares with fixing. We may earn a commission if you compare through links on this page; it doesn’t change the price you pay.

Compare E.ON Next Pledge with other deals at your postcode
- The cap for a typical dual-fuel home on Direct Debit is £1,723 a year from 1 October to 31 December 2026, when we checked on 26 October 2026
- No code needed: on a standard variable tariff you can switch with no exit fee
- Main limitation: a tracker like Next Pledge still rises if the cap rises in January, and not every tariff appears on every comparison
What is the E.ON Next Pledge tariff?
E.ON Next describes Next Pledge as “a 12-month fixed term tracker tariff with variable rates that are always lower in comparison to the Ofgem price cap”. Put simply, the contract length is fixed at 12 months, but the price is not. Every time Ofgem changes the cap, which it does each quarter, your Pledge unit rates change too, and they stay below the cap rates for your region.
The discount is applied to your unit rates, split across electricity and gas. E.ON Next says it is worth £50 a year for an average dual-fuel customer, £25 per fuel. If you use less energy than average, you save less; if you use more, you save a little more. You must pay by Direct Debit, and E.ON Next asks for a smart meter installation where possible.
This is the same idea as other below-cap trackers. Our tracker vs fixed energy guide compares Pledge with British Gas’s Fixed Tracker.
What does Next Pledge cost in October 2026?
From 1 October to 31 December 2026, Ofgem’s cap is £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel home paying by Direct Debit. Average cap rates are 26.32p per kWh for electricity plus a 54.83p daily standing charge, and 7.97p per kWh for gas plus 29.68p a day. Next Pledge sits below those rates, so at typical use it works out at roughly £1,673 a year, or about £4 a month less than the cap.
Option | Typical yearly cost now | Price type | Contract | Exit fee | Code | Best for | Compare |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Standard variable tariff (price cap) | £1,723 (1 Oct to 31 Dec 2026) | Variable, changes quarterly | None | £0 | No code needed | People about to switch anyway | View this deal box above |
E.ON Next Pledge | About £1,673 (£50 below the cap at average use) | Tracker, always below the cap | 12 months | £25 per fuel to leave E.ON Next; £0 to move to another E.ON Next tariff | No code needed | A guaranteed discount with flexibility to fix later | Compare fixes against it (Choose this plan box below) |
British Gas Fixed Tracker | Up to £50 below the cap, as British Gas describes it | Tracker | Check British Gas’s terms | Check British Gas’s terms | No code needed | British Gas customers who want a below-cap rate | Compare at your postcode (boxes below) |
Octopus 12M Fixed | About £1,954 at typical use, when we checked on 26 October 2026 | Fixed for 12 months | 12 months | Check Octopus’s terms | No code needed | Homes that want a known price through winter | Compare fixed deals (Choose this plan box below) |
The Octopus figure is the average of Octopus’s published Direct Debit rates across all regions, when we checked on 26 October 2026; the British Gas figure is how British Gas describes its tracker. All four are for a typical dual-fuel home. Your own cost depends on your region and usage.
What the numbers say: today, Pledge is about £280 a year cheaper than a typical 12-month fix. That gap narrows if the cap rises in January as expected. If January’s cap lands at Cornwall Insight’s £1,999, Pledge would run at roughly £1,949 a year for that quarter, about the same as the Octopus fix. If it lands nearer E.ON Next’s own forecast of £2,166, Pledge would run at roughly £2,116 a year, and the fix would be the cheaper option while that cap lasts.

What happens to Next Pledge in January 2027?
Ofgem will announce the January to March 2027 cap by 25 November 2026. Cornwall Insight’s forecast, published on 30 September, is £1,999.28 a year for a typical home, a 16% rise, driven mainly by higher wholesale gas prices. Suppliers’ own forecasts are higher: E.ON Next predicted £2,166 on 19 October 2026.
Because Pledge tracks the cap, your rates would rise on 1 January along with it, but you would stay about £50 a year below the cap. If the cap then falls in April, your rates fall too, without you having to do anything. Our January 2027 price cap forecast tracks every forecast, and our guide to when the next price cap is announced has the dates.

Pledge now, fix later: how the no-exit-fee switch works
The most useful feature of Next Pledge is easy to miss. In March 2026, E.ON Next confirmed that Pledge customers can move to any E.ON Next fixed tariff without paying an internal exit fee. That means you can sit on Pledge while prices are volatile, then fix with E.ON Next if a good fixed price appears, without a penalty.
What Pledge does not do is let you leave E.ON Next for free. If you switch to another supplier during the 12 months, the exit fee is £25 per fuel, so £50 for dual fuel. That is lower than many fixes, which often charge £75 or more per fuel, but it still eats into the £50 saving. Our guide to switching energy supplier without an exit fee explains the 49-day rule at the end of any contract.
Was Next Pledge better earlier in 2026?
Yes, for a while. E.ON Next’s March 2026 news release said Pledge was then worth £100 below the cap at average use, priced at £1,541 against the April cap of £1,641. On 26 October 2026, E.ON Next’s own tariff page quotes a £50 saving. If you joined earlier in the year, check which version of Pledge you are on, because your discount is set by your contract.
Is E.ON Next a good supplier?
E.ON Next is one of Britain’s largest energy suppliers. On 26 October 2026 its Trustpilot page showed a TrustScore of 4.5 out of 5 from 242,165 reviews. E.ON Next is registered in Nottingham and supplies gas and electricity across Great Britain, along with EV chargers, solar panels, batteries and heat pumps.

FAQ
Is E.ON Next Pledge a fixed tariff?
No. The contract lasts a fixed 12 months, but the rates are variable and follow the Ofgem price cap each quarter. E.ON Next guarantees they stay below the cap.
How much does Next Pledge save?
E.ON Next says about £50 a year for an average dual-fuel home, £25 per fuel, as of 26 October 2026. The saving comes off your unit rates, so it is smaller if you use less energy than average.
Will my Next Pledge price go up in January 2027?
Probably, because forecasts suggest the cap will rise. Cornwall Insight expects £1,999 a year at typical use from January, which would put Pledge at roughly £1,949, and E.ON Next’s own forecast of £2,166 would put it near £2,116. Ofgem confirms the cap by 25 November 2026.
Can I leave Next Pledge early?
Yes. Moving to another E.ON Next tariff costs nothing, but leaving E.ON Next for another supplier costs £25 per fuel. In the last 49 days of the contract you can switch without an exit fee.
Is Next Pledge better than fixing?
Today it is cheaper, at about £1,673 a year against roughly £1,954 for Octopus 12M Fixed when we checked on 26 October 2026. If January’s cap lands at Cornwall Insight’s £1,999, the two cost about the same over winter. If it lands nearer E.ON Next’s own £2,166 forecast, the fix would be cheaper while that cap lasts.
Do I need a smart meter for Next Pledge?
E.ON Next asks for a smart meter installation where possible, and Direct Debit is required. Check the tariff page or ask E.ON Next if your home cannot have one.
Final decision card
E.ON Next Pledge is a sensible winter choice if you are on a standard variable tariff: it costs about £1,673 a year at typical use today, £50 below the £1,723 cap, and lets you fix with E.ON Next later with no internal exit fee. It will still rise if January’s cap rises. If you want certainty, compare fixed deals now and again after Ofgem’s announcement on 25 November.
