Scottish Power wind farm energy supplier

Who Is Scottish Power?

Scottish Power was founded in 1990, headquartered in Glasgow, and acquired by Spanish utility giant Iberdrola in 2007. It supplies over 5 million homes and businesses across England, Scotland, and Wales — not just Scottish customers.
Scottish Power claims to be the first UK supplier to generate 100% of the renewable electricity it supplies from its own generation assets — primarily 38+ onshore UK wind farms. No other major supplier currently makes this claim.
Trustpilot 4.3/5 from 157,000+ reviews. 8% electricity market share, 7% gas. Part of Iberdrola, a world leader in wind energy.

Scottish Power Tariffs & Current Energy Deals UK

Six tariff types — each with different price certainty, exit fees, and flexibility. Understanding the differences is essential before comparing.

1

Standard Variable (SVT)

Default tariff tracking the Ofgem cap. No exit fees. £1,641/year Q2 2026. You can leave anytime.

2

Cap Tracker

Mirrors the Ofgem cap but £7.50 cheaper per fuel per year than the SVT. No exit fee. No fixed end date.

3

Help Beat Cancer Fixed

Fixed-rate tariff supporting Cancer Research UK. Over £40 million raised since 2012. £50/fuel exit fee.

4

Green Fixed

100% renewable electricity from Scottish Power's own UK wind farms. REGO certified. £50/fuel exit fee.

5

Weekend Smart

Half-price electricity weekends 11am–4pm with SMETS2. Bill credit applied automatically.

6

EV Optimise

Add-on: 5–8p/kWh smart EV charging. Requires Easee charger (5p) or existing charger (8p). SMETS2 required.

Scottish Power unit rates vs Ofgem cap

Scottish Power Unit Rates vs Ofgem Cap (April 2026)

Scottish Power's SVT rates are at or near the Ofgem cap maximum. Fixed deals may offer rates below the cap. London-area rates shown below — regional rates vary by 10–20% across Ofgem's 14 distribution zones.
Switch uses your postcode to apply your correct regional rate when displaying results — ensuring accurate annual cost comparisons, not national averages.

Should You Switch Away from Scottish Power?

Five common situations — and what Switch recommends for each.

1

On Scottish Power SVT for 12+ months

Compare now — strong case to switch. You're on the cap maximum. Fixed deals may save £100–£300/year.

2

In final 49 days of fixed deal

Compare and switch — no exit fee. Ofgem waives fees in this window. Don't roll onto the SVT by default.

3

Mid-contract, 50+ days remaining

Calculate net saving after £50/fuel exit fee. If saving exceeds £100 total exit fee, year-one saving is still positive.

4

On Cap Tracker, happy with service

Worth comparing — other suppliers may offer lower fixed rates or zero exit fees that beat the tracker's slight discount.

5

Considering switching TO Scottish Power

Is ScottishPower's renewable tariff worth paying more for?

ScottishPower generates all its electricity from wind and hydroelectric sources in the UK — making it one of the only Big Six suppliers that backs its 'renewable' claim with owned generation rather than certificates. For environmentally-conscious households, that distinction matters.
There is typically a small premium for ScottishPower's renewable tariff compared to the cheapest non-renewable alternatives. Against other renewable challengers like Octopus or EDF, the gap can be minimal — especially during periods of competitive market pricing.
Compare ScottishPower's tariffs against the full market on Switch. You may find a cheaper renewable tariff, or you may confirm ScottishPower is the best value green option for your postcode.
Scottish Power green energy

Scottish Power Green Energy — What Does 100% Renewable Mean?

Scottish Power is the first UK supplier to claim it generates 100% of the renewable electricity it supplies from its own UK generation assets — primarily 38+ onshore wind farms powering over 1.2 million UK homes.
However: Scottish Power's overall fuel mix is approximately 29% renewable (below the UK average of 41%). Its Green Fixed tariff is matched kWh-for-kWh with electricity from Scottish Power's own wind generation. Fully renewable gas (biomethane) is not part of the standard offering.
