As of 12 October 2026, Ofgem’s dual-fuel Direct Debit price cap is £1,723 a year for a typical household from 1 October to 31 December 2026. Scottish Power’s main fixed option is the 1 Year Fixed Price, alongside the Cap Tracker Dec 2027 and Green Fixed + Boiler Cover. Check exit fees before switching, as fixed tariffs can carry one.

The £1,723 figure is based on typical use of 2,500 kWh of electricity and 9,500 kWh of gas a year. The cap limits unit rates and standing charges on default tariffs. It does not cap your total bill if you use more than typical.
A fix locks your unit rates for its term. That helps if the January 2027 cap rises, which several forecasters expect, though forecasts move. A fix can look expensive if wholesale prices fall and variable rates drop.

Our verdict, as of 23 October 2026: Scottish Power is a large, long-established supplier owned by Iberdrola, but its customer service scores are below average this year. Which? gave it the lowest overall score in its latest energy survey at 56% (62% customer score), Citizens Advice ranks it 12th of 16 at 2.76 out of 5, and MoneySavingExpert scores it 3.20 out of 5. Its default prices follow the Ofgem cap, so compare a fix on annual cost before you stay or switch.

Which? says customers rated Scottish Power below average for every part of its service, with two stars across the board, and that 6% of its customers made a formal complaint in the last 12 months. The most common problems they reported were smart meters not sending readings (9%), needing a new meter (7%) and Direct Debits set too high (7%). On the plus side, Citizens Advice scores its phone waiting times at 4.0 out of 5, and Which? rated its help for customers who need extra support as acceptable.

What does Martin Lewis say about ScottishPower?

We could not find a recent, dated Martin Lewis verdict on Scottish Power. His site, MoneySavingExpert, publishes customer service scores instead: in its latest survey, from December 2025, Scottish Power scored 3.20 out of 5. That is mid-table, behind Octopus Energy and Fuse Energy (3.97 each) but ahead of British Gas (3.17), E.ON Next (3.16), EDF (3.04), OVO (3.03) and Utilita (2.99). (MoneySavingExpert, 22 Dec 2025)

Is ScottishPower under investigation?

We found no open Ofgem enforcement investigation into Scottish Power’s household supply business when we checked on 23 October 2026. It does remain in a reduced compliance engagement with Ofgem, alongside British Gas, EDF and Octopus Energy, over smart meters that are installed but not working in smart mode; Ofgem says this is not a finding of non-compliance. Ofgem has acted before: in March 2020 it said it had an open compliance case into Scottish Power’s complaints handling, and in November 2020 it opened an investigation into its 2019 smart meter roll-out, which it closed in November 2023 after Scottish Power agreed to pay £440,000 into the Energy Industry Voluntary Redress Fund, with no formal finding of breach. Which energy company gets the most complaints?

On Citizens Advice’s April to June 2026 table, which scores complaints relative to supplier size, Utilita and TruEnergy had the weakest complaints scores at 0.5 out of 5, followed by Scottish Power and British Gas at 1.0. The best were Good Energy at 4.0 and Outfox Energy, Octopus Energy and EnergyCoop at 3.5. Citizens Advice will publish its next scores in December 2026. (Citizens Advice)

Why is ScottishPower so expensive?

Usually it isn’t more expensive than other big suppliers on the same tariff type. Its Standard Variable tariff is priced in line with the Ofgem price cap, which is £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel home on Direct Debit from 1 October to 31 December 2026, the same cap that limits every supplier’s default tariff. Bills feel high if you are on that default tariff, use more than typical, pay by a dearer method, or live in a region with higher standing charges. A fixed tariff, from Scottish Power or a rival, can cost less, so compare annual cost for your postcode.

Scottish Power says existing customers can move between its tariffs at any time without exit fees, through the online account or the ScottishPower app. That makes it easy to move from the Standard Variable tariff onto a fix if the numbers work.
If your fix is ending, Scottish Power writes to you before the end date. From that point you can switch to another supplier without an exit fee. If you do nothing, you roll onto the Standard Variable tariff, which is priced in line with the Ofgem cap.
If you leave a fixed tariff for another supplier before the end date, you may pay an exit fee, so check exit fees before switching on Scottish Power’s exit fees page. Work out whether the saving from switching is bigger than the fee before you move.
